LAST GAME: In a game marred by a one-hour, 41-minute rain

delay, the B-Mets emerged with a 13-8 victory over Erie Saturday

night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton plated a seasonbest

eight runs in the first inning to take a commanding 8-0

lead before rain halted play in the top of the second inning.

Coming out of the delay, the SeaWolves responded with six

unanswered runs off Edgar Ramirez, who replaced starter

Chris Schwinden following the delay, to get within two. Erie

would get no closer though as Kirk Nieuwenhuis smashed a

three-run homer in the third off reliever Jose Ortega. Nieuwenhuis

led all hitters with four RBI and finished with three hits,

one shy of the cycle. Nick Evans also managed a three-hit

evening and scored three runs. Roy Merritt was terrific in

relief, tying a career-high with 3.2 innings of one-hit work, and

was named the winning pitcher. John Lujan tossed the ninth

in 1-2-3 fashion to secure the win. Duane Below was hung

with the loss, his tenth. The southpaw surrendered five runs in

just two-thirds of an inning.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mike Antonini will attempt

to rebound following his worst start of the season. The

southpaw allowed a season-high eight runs on 10 hits over

3.2 innings in a loss, July 20 at Bowie. On the year, Antonini is

6-8 with a 4.20 ERA over 115.2 innings, which is tied for the

fifth-highest inning total in the Eastern League. His 1.63 BB/9

IP is the second-best in the circuit. Antonini went 7-5 with a

5.32 ERA over 25 appearances spanning 115 innings last

year with Binghamton and was the Mets’ 18th-round choice in

the June 2007 draft out of Georgia College & State University.

RHP Anthony Shawler will make his fourth start with the Sea-

Wolves this afternoon. He has lost back-to-back starts, including

his last one, July 20 versus Reading when he gave up a

season-high seven runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings.

Shawler opened his time with Erie as a reliever before making

a pair of spot-starts at the end of June. He is 1-2 with a 4.44

ERA over 52.2 innings and is 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA over 19.1

innings as a starter. Shawler spent 2009 with West Michigan

(Low-A) and appeared in 37 games with a 7-5 mark and a

3.76 ERA over 107.2 innings as a spot-start and long reliever.

Detroit drafted him in the ninth round of the June 2008 draft

out of Old Dominion University.
