Collin McHugh continued his strong summer with the B-Mets. The right-hander retired the side in order in the first inning, capping the frame by striking out Jeremy Farrell on a nasty curveball. It was the first of eight strike outs for the B-Mets hurler.
The Georgia native allowed the lead-off batter to reach in both the second and third, but escaped unscathed using a strike out to end each inning. McHugh came back with a perfect fourth inning.
Curve starter Michael Colla kept pace with McHugh in the first inning, setting the B-Mets down in order. The righty faced the minimum over the first three innings, before the B-Mets struck in the fourth.
Colla got the first two outs in the frame before Reese Havens singled to centerfield. With Juan Lagares at the plate, Colla uncorked a pivotal wild pitch that allowed Havens to advance to second. Lagares, entering the game 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position and two outs, delivered in that same situation. He drove Havens home with a double to right, giving Binghamton a 1-0 lead.
McHugh worked around a two-out single to post a scoreless fifth, but fell into trouble in the sixth. He hit lead-off batter Starling Marte and allowed him to move to third when he bounced a pick-off throw to first.
A one-out walk to Jeremy Farrell put runners at the corners for the Curve. McHugh bounced back by striking out Andrew Lambo and inducing Tony Sanchez to fly out to deep right-centerfield. McHugh exited with the lead after allowing three hits and racking up eight strike outs over six shutout innings.
Jose Reyes led off the sixth and gave the large crowd a charge. The shortstop, in his second rehab game with the B-Mets, ripped a 1-2 pitch from Colla deep over the right field fence to give Binghamton a 2-0 lead.
Matt den Dekker followed with a double to left and Juan Lagares drove him home with a single to left. The hit capped Lagares’ fifth three-hit game as a B-Met. He extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Lagares’ hit chased Colla from the game. The righty left after allowing three runs on seven hits over five and a third innings. Tim Alderson entered and shut the B-Mets down, striking out a pair to end the inning.
Jack Egbert took control on the mound in the seventh and was greeted harshly by Altoona first baseman Matt Curry. The left-hander hitter deposited a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for his sixth jack of the year.
Egbert settled down after the dinger. He retired the next three he faced and worked around a one-out single in a scoreless eighth. The Staten Island native returned for the ninth and tossed a perfect frame to nail down his fifth save.
McHugh earned his sixth straight win and seventh of the season. Michael Colla suffered his tenth loss. Tim Alderson retired all eight B-Mets he faced to wrap up Altoona’s pitching tab.
