Rain Cools Binghamton Bats in 6-1 Loss
BINGHAMTON,NY – With a persistent, heavy mist battering NYSEG Stadium, the Binghamton Metswere held to just three hits and collected none after the third inning in a 6-1loss to the Erie SeaWolves.
TheB-Mets threatened early against Erie starter James Avery, but failed to break throughwith a hit with runners aboard. Avery allowed a single and walked a batter ineach of the first three innings, but escaped each frame unharmed. Binghamtonstranded six runners through the first three innings.
Thegame remained scoreless until the fourth when the SeaWolves solved B-Metsstarter Mark Cohoon. With one on and one out, Bryan Pounds launched a home runthrough the rain and wind over the left field fence. The drive was all theoffense Erie needed.
Averysettled down after his initial bumpy three innings and retired the final sevenhe faced. He finished after the fifth, having allowed three hits and handingout three walks.
TheSeaWolves added to their lead in the sixth against Edgar Ramirez. John Murrianreached on fielder’s choice, advanced two bases on consecutive Erie singles,and scored on Corey Jones’ sacrifice fly.
Binghamton’sonly offensive score came without the benefit of a hit. Owning a 3-0 lead, Eriereliever Jared Gayhart took over in the sixth and loaded the bases on threewalk. Juan Centeno’s ground out to first brought home Allan Dykstra with theB-Mets only run.
Poundsadded another homer in the eighth, taking Robert Carson deep on a solo shot toright. Brad Holt allowed three hits and two runs in the ninth.
TheB-Mets went quietly to cap things off. Three SeaWolves relievers combined to retirethe final ten Binghamton batters in order. Kenny Faulk tossed two perfectinnings and Michael Morrison sealed things with a spotless ninth.
MarkCohoon suffered his first loss of the season and James Avery earned his firstwin.
TheB-Mets (2-3) wrap up their season-opening homestand and three-game series withErie tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. RHP Collin McHugh gets the ball for Binghamtonand takes on LHP Jay Voss for Erie. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-gameshow begins at 6:20 PM.
