Another donation of $25.00 came in today and I
want to thank the giver. The total is now $275.00 and well on the way to my
$500.00 goal for March. I can’t express how much this is needed and I bless all
of you for your gifts.
Look, I let everyone else join on the David Wright bandwagon yesterday. I like to tell small
stories about the time I spent with some of these guys during the three years I
was honored to have clubhouse passes to the Mets spring training.
There are strict rules when you are in there.
You just can’t wander around and tap on the shoulder of players you wanted to
talk to. The rookies are in the front row and, if they are sitting facing
towards the outside, they are ripe for approaching, but anything in the back
row takes the blessing of Jay Horwitz, who organizes when the beat reporters
can all swarm towards their lockers.
That happened a few times with David when I
was there, but I never felt comfortable to ask a question. I was just the beat
reporter for Savannah, so it wasn’t my place to join in here.
A day came prior to the Mets first 2007 scrimmage
that takes place the day before the first ST game. The Mets used to use this
opportunity to raise monies for the unfortunate death of their 2001 OF
prospect, Brian Cole.
I happened to be standing near the entrance to
the coach’s office when Bobby Bonilla came in for the union meetings. Wright walked from around his locker and, off the cuff, said to me he couldn’t believe
what a hulk of a man Bonilla still was. I told him to get Bobby Bo fitted for a
uniform and we both laughed,
I decided to break protocol and asked David if
I could record his thought on Cole before that game was played the next day. He
said sure, and escorted me past the coaches offices and out the back door where
the in-net pitching warm-up cages were. We talked for around 10 minutes which I
still have on tape.
I found out later that I was wrong about their
relationship together and, in fact, they never played a lick together. Still,
David took pity on a lost reporter and gave me what information that I needed.
THAT’S, IMO, is why the class act named David
Wright is captain.
John Delcos on David Wright - link
- Wright is simply the best player the Mets have, and arguably the best player
– outside of Tom Seaver – they ever produced. And best, I mean both on and off
the field.
Well, the good news is Mack’s Mets has full
time on-site reporters for all upcoming Savannah Sand Gnats (Wally Murphy, ‘Savannah Bug
Spray’) and Las Vegas 51s (‘Sin City Savoy’)
home games. The sad news is we failed to recruit anyone for either Binghamton
or St. Lucie. Please contact me at macksmets@gmail.com
if you are still out there and are willing to contribute to any number of
games.
Did you see TC's comments about Jay Horwitz possibly playing the outfield at some point this season? Should the manager of the New York Mets be disrespecting the players he has on his roster this much a week and a half before the season starts?
Yeah, I know, it's a joke. It sure is.

Ronny Cedeno cleared
waivers after release from St. Louis.
The Toronto Blue Jays claimed RHP Todd Redmond
From ex-Mack’s Mets writer Stephen Guilbert - The only two qualifying
shortstops who had both a higher OBP and fielding % than Ruben Tejada in 2012 were Elvis
Andrus and Derek Jeter.

I love that note about Tejada. I had looked at him vs. Andrus a few weeks ago and realized their numbers aren't that far apart. I think the Mets have a steal in Tejada, especially since he doesn't have a high profile the way an Andrus does. I'm very happy having him man SS for the next decade at a discount - I only see improvement coming from him.
and, God forbid either Evans or Cecchini develop and you have to move Tejada to second...
forget his bad spring... we hit the reset button in 8 days
I think Tejada could turn out to be a superior shortstop (or possibly second baseman) for the Mets, but I think it is premature to compare him to Andrus. Although both came to the majors at 20, and Elvis is only 1 year older, he already has 2591 plate appearances to Tejada's 1132. In his 22 yr old season, Andrus' WAR was 4.0, with a dWAR of 1.6, while Tejada's WAR last year was 1.9 and his dWAR was 0.6. I want to see Tejada put up some numbers close to that before I annoint him.
BTW, I see Ronny Cedeno has been snapped up by Houston. I still think that a minor league deal for Chone Figgins, if he would accept it, could be a wise move for Alderson.
Cedeno would have been a Baltimore Orioles kind of pick up that made that team so competitive last year.
Alderson seems to like to stick with who is in camp and not bring in new players late into ST. I remember Jerry Manuel/Omar loved doing this and we used to laugh when a cab pulled up from the airport to the ST clubhouse entrance. You never knew who was going to get out of that cab.
