The Miami Marlins have released IF/OF Chone Figgins. They had signed him to a minor league deal in February after he was released by the Seattle Mariners last November with $8 million still remaining on his 4 year /$36 million contract. Should Figgins interest the Mets?
At 35 years of age, Figgins best years are behind him. Nonetheless, he has been an outstanding ball player and the question is whether he still has the potential to excel. Versatile in the field, he has played the outfield, mainly in center, and infield, primarily third but a lot of second base too. Like Jason Bay’s 3 years in New York, Chone Figgins 3 years in Seattle were a nightmare. In his 8 years with the Angels he compiled a slash line of .291/.363/.388/.751. His 3 years in Seattle produced a slash line of .227/.302/.283/.585. Could a change of venue produce a resurgence? In Spring Training for the Marlins this year, in 31 plate appearances, he was hitting .308 with an OBP of .367.
Given the Mets current bench options and the state of their outfield, should Sandy be on the phone with Figgins’ agent? Hmmm!
