Wilson Ramos Ranked Eighth on Top 10 Catchers Right Now!
Carlos Beltrán Featured on “Top 10 Last 10” Ranking of Players From the Last Decade
January 19, 2019 – New York Mets right fielder Brandon Nimmo was ranked sixth on MLB Network’s annual Top 10 Right Fielders Right Now! program earlier tonight, while teammate Wilson Ramos was ranked eighth on the Top 10 Catchers Right Now!. Nimmo, who makes his debut on the countdown, finished one spot ahead of the Cincinnati Reds’ Yasiel Puig and one spot behind free agent Bryce Harper. Ramos finished one spot ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays’ Mike Zunino and one spot behind the Washington Nationals’ Kurt Suzuki. In addition to Nimmo and Ramos, the Mets’Jed Lowrie ranked second on Top 10 Second Basemen Right Now!, while Robinson Canó ranked fourth on the same list last week.
Hosted by MLB Network’s Brian Kenny alongside MLB Network analysts, each Top 10 Right Now! ranking considers player performance over the last two seasons, offensive and defensive metrics, both advanced Statcast data and traditional numbers, and expert analysis by the MLB Network research team.
On tonight’s countdown, MLB Network analyst and World Series champion outfielder Cliff Floyd said of Nimmo, “I think he has to figure out how to make the adjustments more consistently every day against lefties. You have to force Mickey Calloway’s hand, you have to force him to put you in there every day by going out there and saying, ‘When I face a lefty, I’m not getting platooned, I’m not missing at-bats. I’m playing every single day.’ …This year is that opportunity for him to show that he can hit lefties.”
On Ramos, MLB Network analyst and four-time World Series champion Joe Girardi said, “This guy can really hit. He’s a good hitter for other positions – you put him at first or third, he’s gonna produce. I know in 2017 his numbers were down, but he was coming off that ACL surgery. But 2016, huge numbers in Washington, 2018, huge numbers as well. He’s a decent thrower, he’s a real big body back there so he’s gonna give you a good target. Not a great blocker and I think part of that is because of his size, he’s not gonna have a lot of range. This guy is not just a home run hitter, he gets on base, works counts and he’s a tough out.”
