OPEN THREAD – Current Projected Syracuse Roster

I keep track of this stuff every off-season and I always complain that there simply too many people still on a team’s ‘board’.

This year is no different and the glut of relievers has my head violently shaking.
Here is the “25 man” roster I currently have on my board:

Catchers (5) - Patrick Mazeika,Tomas Nido, Colton Plaia, Jeff Glenn, Dustin                                           Houle

1B (2) -            Peter Alonso, Joey Terdoslovich

2B (3) -            Luis Guillorme, Dilson Herrera, Sam Haggerty

SS (2) -            Christian Colon, Gavin Cecchini

            3B (2) -            David Thompson, Cody Asche

OF (6) -           Kevin Kaczmarski, Tim Tebow, Kevin Taylor, Rajai Davis, Gregor Blanco, Rymer Liriano

SP (8) -            Hector Santiago, Drew Gagnon, Chris Flexen, Walter Lockhart, Kyle Dowdy  , Corey Oswalt, Mickey Jannis, Zach Lee

RP (19) -          Matt Blackham, Corey Taylor, Ian Kroll, Joshua Torres, Dave Roseboom, Matt Gage, Blake Taylor, Matt Purke, Buddy Baumann, Ryan O'Rourke, Cody Martin, Logan Taylor, P.J. Conlon, Austin McGeorge, Joseph Zanghi, Ryder Ryan,Chris Mazza, Arquimeedes Caminero, Casey Coleman

That’s 42 players! 19 relievers!

Please tear the list apart for me or correct any that might have flown the coop.

Is it possible the Mets will sign one of the remaining free agent catchers to a minor league contract? I have no reason to believe d'Arnaud will last the entire season, and I suspect the Mets do not want Nido as a backup on the 2019 roster.

Are you assuming that Smith wins the first base job over Alonso? I believe it really could happen, especially if the Spring Training numbers are relatively similar. Smith would have four to six weeks to try to hold the job, knowing that Alonso becomes a threat as soon as he is in the minors long enough to guarantee an extra year of team control.

The way things are shaping up in Queens, it looks like there's going to be room for a backup shortstop on the major league roster. I suspect they will sign a free agent SS to a minor league deal and let that person compete with Cecchini for the last spot on the 25 man roster.

This is pet peeve of mine, but I hate when teams carry eight relievers. I don't like projecting rosters with more than seven relievers, since it is almost a guarantee that RP8 will be nothing more than a Quad-A swingman who is not worth remembering. The Mets seem to have four relievers locked down, and I think they'll sign one more to a split contract. That leaves 20 (!) relievers for three or four spots!

There will be at least one lefty, and I'm guessing you have Zamora in Queens already. The second lefty will be Krol or an unsigned free agent. (Probably the free agent.)

Jack -

Morning

Regarding 1B... I project Smith starting OD in Queens at 1B. My assumption is Alonso will quickly switch teams with him, but, for now, this the OD projection only.

BTW... lots of people reached me complimenting your last post. You are an excellent writer and a calm voice in the Mets World. Keep them coming.

Kyle Dowdy was a Rule 5 drafter, so he has an inside track on making the big club or must be offered back.

I echo Mack's compliment to Jack Flynn.

Far too many guys to sort down for AAA, but many guys may end up being released or demoted. Guys who succeed will HAVE to excel right out of the gate.

The pen jam for AAA could be worse...some Mets guys may end up in AAA (e.g. Sewald).

Smith hit 80 points less than JD Davis in AAA in 2018. Pete will be our 1B unless he fails. He won't fail.

Thanks to Mack and Thomas for the kind words. I will do my best to post more often. (God knows Mack has heard that line from me before!)

Reese is correct about Dowdy. For many years I have lamented how poorly the Mets have treated the Rule V draft. Perhaps BVW has a different vision. On a team with four established relievers and three or four bullpen openings right now, they are actually in a perfect position to break camp with Dowdy and give him low leverage April innings to see how he fares. Unless he is terrible in Florida, I would give it a shot.

Yup, dowdy might delay smith in that last spot for a month or two.

I think Frazier starts at third and Smith starts at first, with the new kid (Davis) providing depth at both spots.....at least until The Pounder is ready to rumble (May 1st?)

At that point, Smith is likely an afterthought with Davis your primary back up on the corners......or, he might surprise us all and take third away from Frazier (who would become the back up on the corners, I guess).

As far as the AAA roster, that is way more folks then needed so I see some cuts coming (or perhaps a package deal to another team....quantity for quality).

Gavin might be in jeopardy.....new regime and all.

Did I miss a Gimenex trade?

Hobie with the eagle eye already! Gimenez should be in AAA for sure, adding to the logjam.

Add me to those who appreciate Jack's fine writing. I look forward to seeing more! 👍

I don't know if he'd accept it, but I'd offer a STRICTLY MnL deal to Joe Kings. Aside from the box-office appeal upstate, he'd hopefully be as fine a mentor to the kids there as he was for Amed in '18.

Then, if (and ONLY if) we had an emergency situation here and he were productive upstate, he could be added to the 40.

I' m NOT for even offering him a chance to win a ML job in ST. The job would be strictly a 'Cuse deal, barring an emergency that hopefully will never happen.

Terdoslavich and Baumann became a free agents in November. Haven't heard that either has re-signed with the Mets.

I think Matt Gage and Cody Asche are free agents as well. I was hoping they'd bring back Jhoan Urena.

If Seward ever sees the Mets’ MLB roster, BVW messed up. Seward isn’t anything more than a plug-in and cannot be trusted to consistently get big league hitters out. He belongs on this roster.
