Brennan: Pete Remains a Met; Traded Players Talent Evaluation; Vientos Projections

PETE ALONSO REMAINS A NEW YORK MET!

Pete Alonso has agreed to a two-year, $54 million to remain with the Mets, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed. It includes a $10 million signing bonus.

Not what he would have liked, but still…a lot of cabbage.

What an offense!

Former Mets Mike Vasil is Now a Tier 5 Tampa Rays Prospect

Prospects1500 lists their top 50 for every MLB team.

The other day: they got to the Tampa Rays. They rank in 5 tiers:

P1500 defines “Tier 5” as:

“Players of interest, worth keeping an eye on, who may make (or have made) the majors but provide minimal impact

Mike Vasil is their #26 (and a Tier 5)

Former Mets prospect Paul Gervase?

- Not even in the Rays’ top 50 (nor presumably in Tier 5).

So, the next time you dread the Mets trading prospects, unless it is a Pete Crow Armstrong, don’t swat it.

Fangraphs has PCA in 2025 at 16 HR, 61 RBI, 30 steals, and .244, in 134 games. Solid for a 22 year old.

Anyway…

You’re probably overrating your favorite prospect guy.  Chill out.

Chances are, you like him too much.

VIENTOS PROJECTIONS - FANGRAPHS 2025:

157 games, 35 HR, 101 RBIs, .250

Sweet.

METS SIGNED NICK MADRIGAL…

…to a majors/minors deal.

He was drafted 4th overall in 2018. He also is 5’8”.

Predictably, the power has not been there for Little Nick.

His career numbers on the surface look decent, 878 at bats, .274.

But just 4 HRs, 39 doubles, and 5 triples in 940 career plate appearances.

He averaged .318 in 303 at bats in his first two seasons, and about .255 since. He does not walk much, so his OBP after those first two partial seasons is about .305. Strong glove, some speed.

Last 3 years, 565 at bats, 24 doubles, a triple, 2 HRs, 28 walks…MEH!

Bottom line: maybe he is a cheaper Iglesias alternative.  He is major league ready.  And his mediocre offense output in the majors at 5’8” makes me wonder why a team would gamble on a short guy at 4th overall.

Hopefully, he is a useful Mets piece in 2025. Maybe Super Joe McEwing II.

Mets scored 768 runs last year. How about 850 this year? Why not?

Tom, I miss Lavender more than Vasil. Tom, I would like a Mets lineup from you, just to see if we agree. Hint: Alonso can be a weapon at #5 but strikes out too much, too slow, and doesn’t get on base enough to be higher.

Once I have my coffee, I will come up with a line up

Vs. Lefties:

Lindor
Nimmo
Soto
Vientos
Peter Potamus
Alvarez
Marte/Siri
Taylor
Acuna

Vs. righties

Lindor
Nimmo
Soto
Vientos
Peter Potamus
Alvarez
Winker
McNeil
Taylor/Marte

Fill ins: Madrigal, Torrens

Mauricio? Baty? AAA for the time being

Danged good line up. 5.5 runs per game

A trade of Marte still possible to reduce payroll.

Joey Meneses is not a happy camper this morning.

Brett Baty is even less happy.

Baty needs to demolish AAA. No slack days. He had his chances. He blew it. Now, he has to be ready if someone gets hurt.

MLB (Adler) wrote this 2 days ago: “The NL East is one of the most hotly contested divisions in baseball right now, with the three-team rivalry between the Phillies, Mets and Braves. All three made the playoffs last year, and all three are projected by PECOTA to make the playoffs again in 2025. But the team that's on top might surprise you.

That's Atlanta. The Phillies are the reigning division champions, and the Mets just made the biggest splash of the offseason by signing Juan Soto, but it's the Braves who are projected to win the NL East this season.

The Braves are projected to finish in first place at 92-70, the Mets in second at 89-73 and the Phillies in third at 88-74.“

-What a difference two days make. Mets have to be Division favorites right now.

LOL to Adler. Does he expect Ozuna to do all that again? It’s amazing how wife beaters are forgiven elsewhere, real ones, not just accused. And what about their starting pitching and right fielder coming back in June?

The Phillies are stacked pitching wise. They are the biggest obstacle to our heroes.

I agree it was a bad day for Joey Meneses. It also will drive some other changes, because the Mets loaded up on infielders that can play multiple positions. With first base locked down and Vientos expected to spend most of the time at third, you don't need Nick Madrigal, Jared Young, Ronny Mauricio, and Jeff McNeil on the 40-man roster. My expectation is that some of them will be involved in a late trade.

All is good again.

I gotta disagree with Tom here. I don't see any scenario where Pete hits lower than clean-up. I also don't think they will bat three righty power hitters in a row.

The line-up is deep enough where Alvarez will be hitting 8th.

Against right handed starters (or teams with right handed heavy bullpens):

Lindor
Nimmo
Soto
Alonso
McNeil
Vientos
Winker
Alvarez
Taylor/Siri

Against Left handed starters or lefty heavy bullpens

Lindor
Marte
Soto
Alonso
Nimmo
Vientos
Acuna/McNeil
Alvarez
Taylor/Siri

I am not convinced that Acuna will be on the MLB roster and if he is, I don't think he'll be the short side of a platoon and bench player. They will want him getting regular at-bats.

TexasGusCC said...

So far, two lineups presented both have Nimmo in the top two. Nimmo’s OBP has gone down every year for five straight years and last year was a horrible .327 as Nimmo wants to now hit homeruns. He doesn’t belong in the top. He may be better off splitting Vientos and Alonso. Too, he doesn’t have the speed he had to be a weapon on the bases. And while we all think Winker should be towards the middle, truth is McNeil is a better hitter.

Remember1969 said...

Nimmo's job in the #2 slot changes - back to the OBP guy that served him well. They don't need home runs from him. He will hit a few by accident, but revert to Nimmo of old. If he is going to continue to try to be a power hitting outfielder, he hits seventh. Nimmo is the best baserunner (with healthy feet) and Lindor-OriginalNimmo-Soto should approach a .420 OBP.
I assume you are talking about Vientos that doesn't have the speed . .i agree with that. If he were faster and a better base runner, he would be a great #2 guy splitting the lefties up.
I also agree that McNeil > Winker, hence my #5 for Jeff and #7 for Jesse

And if we are talking about happy and unhappy people this morning:
Soto = Very happy
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. = Unhappy

Tom Brennan said...

Gus, do you remember when Nimmo hurt his foot? I do not.

But IF he is healed, it is easy to forget he was the first half Mets MVP.

Thru the ASG, he played 90 games, .248/.361/.454, 59 runs and 63 RBIs.

After the ASG, 61 games, .190/.277/.319. Had to be the foot.

Still, despite that tail-off, he hit .319/.424/.607 with RISP, and had a .544 slug % in "late and close" situations.

Impressive. Had he not gotten hurt, maybe he gives Lindor a run for 2024 team MVP.

IF his foot is really healed, I expect a big year from him. They need to sit him more - that is where Siri/Taylor come in. Soto is not sitting.

Trades of prospects? We are in a position of strength, let's see where we are at near the trade deadline. All key prospects should be more trade-valuable by July.

Tom Brennan said...

R69, I think Vlad will have to wait until he goes free agent. He may link up with Juan and Lindor then. Three killers.

Remember1969 said...

Fast forward to February 1, 2026. What is the chance that Alonso will opt-out? Did Cohen/Stearns leave enough in the checkbook to make a run for Vlad if Alonso sticks around.

I am not sure that Alonso opts out at all. Even if he hits 54 home runs and drives in 140, will his market be that much better than it was this winter? Will he want to just stay put and try to keep getting two-year deals from the Mets as his only team?

Hard to guess at this point, but I am thinking Matt Chapman might be a good comp here - same type two-year deal and then an extension after year one.

Rds 900. said...

Sorry, but where does Chapman fit in.

Remember1969 said...

Chapman was a very late sign (March 3) last year holding out for a contract similar to what Alonso was looking for this year. He ended up signing a one year $18M contract with the Giants with a $17M option for a second year. At the conclusion of the year 2024 (actually about a month prior to the end of the year - early Sept), he signed a 6 year $151M extension.
