Mets Internal Options vs. LHH — Some Obvious, Some Fun and Under the Radar:

https://isaacgrofman.substack.com/p/mets-interal-options-vs-lhh-some?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=2794019&post_id=162619562&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=gpx5q&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email

Sean Reid-Foley is an interesting option. His stuff looks similar to previous years, but he's struck out 48% of lefties so far in AAA this season. He’s always been effective against LHH.

Rico Garcia is another fun one. His fastball has a rare shape — 21 inches of IVB puts it among the highest “rising” heaters in the league. He pairs that with two hard, sharp-breaking pitches (CB/SL) that play well to lefties. He’s gotten nearly a 35% chase rate on fastballs in AAA, and both his changeup and curve have been excellent at limiting hard contact.

Syracuse

After a pair of two-out rallies that plated seven runs, the Syracuse Mets still didn't overcome an offensive outburst by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in a 19-8 loss on a rainy Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

Syracuse (13-17) went down early when Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tacked on six runs in the first three innings. The Mets didn’t go down easy, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. After two quick outs, Donovan Walton and Drew Gilbert singled. Jon Singleton was hit by a pitch, and Jared Young brought Walton home with an RBI single to make it 6-1. The next batter, Joey Meneses, cracked a bases-clearing double that brought Syracuse within two, 6-4.

The RailRiders scored two more in the fourth inning to go ahead, 8-4, but once again the Mets responded. Syracuse scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth when Walton doubled, Gilbert walked, and Singleton smashed a three-run homer to cut the deficit, 8-7.

From there, the Mets pitching staff became too short-handed with five pitchers being promoted to the Major Leagues in the last three days.

Although it was a rough day of pitching, the Syracuse lineup notched eight runs off of nine hits. Singleton and Meneses each had three RBIs, and Young drove in the other two runs. Walton led the team with three hits, while Gilbert, McKinney, Singleton, and Young all reached base multiple times.

Binghamton

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, Thursday’s Binghamton Rumble Ponies game against the Erie SeaWolves at UPMC Park has been postponed. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader Friday, with the first game beginning at 4:35 p.m. and the second game starting approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Brooklyn

Despite a two-run blast from 3B Jesus Baez, and a fifth straight multi-hit game from CF Carson Benge, the Brooklyn Cyclones fell to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 8-7, on Thursday night in front of a TV audience on SNY. Wilmington’s victory was their first road win of the season.

Brooklyn’s spotty defense proved to be costly, as three errors aided the Wilmington bats, in addition to the go-ahead Blue Rocks run scoring on a wild pitch in the 9th.

Still, Benge, Baez and 1B Ronald Hernandez all contributed multi-hit efforts. Hernandez is now on a 5 game hitting streak, during which, he is 11-for-18.

Brooklyn scored in the first inning for the second time in the last three contests, when Benge began his strong night with an RBI single to put the ‘Clones in front 1-0. Then, Baez followed suit with an RBI single of his own to double the Brooklyn lead and tag RHP Travis Sthele for a couple of earned runs.

St. Lucie

The St. Lucie Mets put together another late inning rally to beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 5-2 on Thursday evening at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The Mets took two of three in the series from the Cardinals and tied Palm Beach atop the Florida State League East standings.

The game was tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth. With two outs and the bases empty, Trey Snyder started a rally with a double. Nick Roselli followed with a walk. Simon Juan then came to the plate and crushed a three-run homer to give the Mets a 5-2 lead.

Reliever Hunter Hodges worked out of a jam in the home eighth inning and pitched a perfect ninth to close out the victory. He earned his first save.

Mets starter Edgar Moreta tossed 5.0 scoreless innings for the second straight start. He scattered five singles, walked one and struck out five.

Raimon Gomez pitched the sixth and seventh innings, allowing two runs (one earned). He hit 104 mph on the radar gun for the second straight appearance. The Cardinals scored their only runs against him on a two-out balk and a two-out wild pitch that tied the game 2-2 in the seventh inning.

The Mets got on the board first when Jeremy Rodriguez hit a two-out RBI single to plate Vincent Perozo in the second inning.

Juan delivered a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning to bring home Snyder for a 2-0 lead.

Juan went 2 for 4 with the homer and four RBI, all with two outs.

The Mets three pitchers held the Cardinals to 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

The Mets scored three runs in the eighth inning for the second straight game. They have now scored 24 runs in the eighth inning this year, their best offensive inning by five runs.

Note on Chris Devenski: He does have an option left. (And since he has more than five years of service time, he had to consent to being optioned.) Thus, he was sent down, not DFA’ed.

Ernest Dove             @ernestdove

On the surface seems like an interesting move for Jose Urena to elect free agency away from a team that literally needs another 6th starter this weekend etc and likely will need arms ongoing for awhile into all star break.

Good morning Mack. Even in the low minors, it turns out that throwing 104 alone does not make you untouchable. It’s a pretty good tool to have though. Let’s hope that the lab and the development staff can work with it. Keeping my fingers crossed that Megill has actually taken the step forward that it looks like he has. Two touch losses vs. AZ, and the upcoming Cardinals have been hot. Let’s hope that Soto’s big day gets him going and we score plenty of runs this weekend.

So far, Gomez has always had control problems. He needs to dial down to around 99-100 and concentrate on hitting the barn

The key is what Soto produces in the next 25 at-bats

Ditto Vientos

That Adam Smith said...

Ugh. Vientos looks lost. I think he needs to move closer to the plate (If this works, uncle Steve can Venmo me). I was looking forward to a big season from Mark, and if he gets it together this lineup is going to be a beast. But right now, he doesn’t look like the same hitter as last year.

I think in the long run Vientos will be fine
