4/7/10

4-7 DRAFT: - Jordan Swagerty, Matt Bischoff, Jake Depew, Quentin Cate... and Reggie Williams

Jordan Swagerty:

ASU - 4-4 from: http://www.baseballrumormill.com/2010/04/mlb-draft-notes-dixon-anderson-and-other-updated-scouting-report/#more  - Threw for the second night in a row and held 93 mph, important because of questions about whether he could maintain his velocity when working back-to-back. His curveball was still hard at 78-84 but had a little more angle than the last time he threw. He won't be the hardest-throwing closer on the board in June, but he'll be one of the best because of his curveball and his aggressive style.

Matt Bischoff:

4-5 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/04/05/big-ten-players-of-the-week-8  - PITCHER OF THE WEEK - Matt Bischoff, Purdue - Sr. RHP, Decatur, Ind./New Haven - Bischoff collects his third career Pitcher of the Week honor and his second of the season, throwing nine innings in Purdue’s Big Ten opener on Friday. The senior allowed just two runs on six hits without walking a batter while striking out 10 as the Boilermakers won, 3-2, in 10 innings. With his performance, he took over sole possession of second place on Purdue’s all-time strikeouts list with 231 in his career. The right-hander fanned the side in the first and tallied at least one strikeout in seven of his nine innings of work.

Jake Depew:

4-5 from: - http://perfectgame.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=114295945&f=6174069131&m=1751004502  - Depew is ranked 153 best high school prospect in the country by PG. That makes him one of the top 10 or 12 catchers in the nation according to PG rankings. Some of the other catchers ranked ahead of him are actually projected to play a different position at the next level. That said, personally, we have seen him a lot and I believe Depew could easily be ranked even higher on our list and maybe he will be next time we update. We are aware that there are several scouts that really like him a lot.

Quentin Cate:

4-6 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/04/06/tcbb-players-of-the-week-april-6th  - The College Baseball Blog continues our tradition of naming National Player and Pitcher of the Week. This week we honor Wright State senior infielder Quentin Cate. Cate picks up Player of the Week honors after going 15-for-25 (.600) with two homers, six doubles, 11 runs and 20 RBI in five games last week. He also registered a 1.080 slugging percentage and .615 on-base percentage for the Raiders. The infielder recorded multiple hits and RBI in all five tilts last week. In a three-game weekend series against Butler, he went 11-for-16 with 10 scores and 15 RBI.

Reggie Williams:

I was going to the game in order to see a number of prospects. The most notable name that is recognized nationally is Reggie Williams, who was a top prospect in the 2009 draft, only to slip due to signability and pitch recognition issues. He went unsigned by the Rangers as their 32nd round pick, and he headed to Middle Georgia to increase his draft stock. He’s already 20 years old, making him the same age as junior college sophomores, so he might be more signable than the majority of junior college freshmen. Williams finished out the game 3-6, and he essentially confirmed everything I’ve been hearing. He has real trouble reading breaking balls, but he has good raw tools to work with. He’s really big for a speedster, and while I peg him as a 65 runner right now, he might be a 55-60 runner as he matures. However, with an average arm and plus range, he’ll be a very good center fielder. He has some raw power in his swing, and he could hit 10-12 home runs a season in his prime, but he’s probably a bottom third hitter due to his pitch recognition problems, as he should strike out a fair number of times.
