4/7/10

4-7 v2.0 - DRAFT: - Jonathan Musser, Drew Pomeranz, Kellen Sweeney, Andrew Barbosa... and Andrew Hedrick

Jonathan Musser:

RHP - 4-6 from: - http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=2248  - It will be interesting watching the development of Musser and Keller over the next few years. Both are signed with Nebraska, so there is a strong chance that the comparison will be easy to watch unless pro ball steps in this summer and takes one of them. But while Keller has thus far received more prospect attention for his abilities than the 6-4, 180 lb Musser, the difference between the two right handers is growing less and less. Musser had his second straight strong outing on Saturday and it’s easy to plot a steady improvement curve for him over the last few years. He was 88-90 mph over three smooth innings Saturday with good feel for his change up and less feel for his big breaking curveball, understandable at this point in the spring.

Drew Pomeranz:

4-6 from Jason Churchill/ http://www.baseballrumormill.com/2010/04/a-preliminary-top-5-mock-draft/#more  - 5) Cleveland Indians - Drew Pomeranz, Ole Miss, LHP: As with the #2 pick, Ranaudo or another college pitcher like Alex Wimmers from OSU could go in this spot too. The Indians took a college pitcher with their top pick in 2009 (RHP Alex White).

Kellen Sweeney:

4-5 from: - perfectgame   - Kellen Sweeney is definitely an early round possibility. He had TJ surgery last fall and is now playing better than ever. There are many who are talked about as being the top hitters in this class, but Sweeney is truly one of them. He might be the most "professional" hitter in high school baseball and he's also an outstanding middle infielder. There's not many quicker bats out there. His brother "Ryan" is a an outfielder playing in the Big Leagues with the A's. Ryan was outstanding as a high school player, we projected him to go in the first round (he went in the 2nd rd) and Kellen is even better in some ways (more power).

4-6 from: - http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=2248  - Sweeney’s August elbow surgery is quickly becoming a dead issue, as he shows no real signs that it’s held him back in any way. In fact, the only visible effect from the surgery is the 15 lbs of very positive strength that Sweeney has added while focusing on recovery instead of baseball repetitions.

Andrew Barbosa:

4-6 from: - http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/04/06/tcbb-players-of-the-week-april-6th  - The College Baseball Blog continues our tradition of naming National Player and Pitcher of the Week. This week we honor South Florida junior LHP Andrew Barbosa. Barbosa struck out a career-high 16 batters during a 9-inning, complete game 5-0 victory over Cincinnati. He only allowed 3 hits and 1 walk. Barbosa was just one shy of the school record of 17 strikeouts set during the 1987 and 1978 seasons. Of his 16 strikes, 14 were swinging. He struck out the side in both the fourth and fifth innings and struck out a batter in every inning except the ninth. The big lefty also struck out a batter in every position of the Bearcat lineup, one through nine.

Andrew Hedrick:

4-6-10 from: - pgcrosschecker  - The most impressive performer for me the first two games was LHP Andrew Hedrick, a 2011 southpaw from Ankeny High School in the Des Moines area. I saw Hedrick pitch at the Pitcher/Catcher Indoor Showcase and he was impressive then, getting a PG 9 grade. He was better outdoors, especially in keeping his delivery directional to the plate. Hedrick pitched under control and pounded the strike zone with an 84-87 mph fastball that seemed to jump on hitters, a hard-spinning mid 70’s curveball and a nice changeup. He struck out 8 hitters in 3 innings of work. One of the best things about the 6-0, 165 lb Hedrick is that there’s little question he’s going to get better over the next couple of years. He is very young in the face and hasn’t started to physically mature much yet. He shows his athleticism in the way he repeats his delivery and moves around the field, and it was instructive to find out that both his parents were college athletes (dad in baseball, mom in basketball), so he has athleticism in his background as well.
