4/9/10

4-9 v.2.0 - DRAFT: - Karsten Whitson, Spencer Navin, Nick Castellanos, Mike Wagner... and Daniel Bibona

Karsten Whitson:

4-6 from Jason Churchill/ http://www.baseballrumormill.com/2010/04/a-preliminary-top-5-mock-draft/#more  - 4) Kansas City Royals - Karsten Whitson, Chipley HS, RHP: Their recent trend of spending money on the draft likely indicates they're not afraid of selecting a high school pitcher like Whitson who could demand a large signing bonus.

Spencer Navin:

4-6 from: - http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=2248  - C Spencer Navin - Navin has signed with SEC Vanderbilt and there is no question in my mind that he has the defensive skills and tools to do very well at that Top 20 school. He was quick and fundamentally sound behind the plate on Saturday and showed excellent arm strength. Navin has the strength and bat speed to hit at that level and was very comfortable in the box against Shipers and Keller. He’s going to have to make some swing adjustments to shorten his swing and that will go a long way in determining how quickly he will earn his playing time. Vanderbilt has two outstanding veteran catchers right now in senior Andrew Giobbi and junior Curt Casali, but with Giobbi graduating and Casali being a highly regarded prospect, they could be very well need Navin right away next spring. In RHPs Sonny Gray and Jack Armstrong, Vanderbilt has two 2011 draft-eligible pitchers who are potential first-round picks, a challenge for any young catcher to handle.

Nick Castellanos:

4-7 from: - http://mlbbonusbaby.com/  - Nick Castellanos, 3B, Archbishop McCarthy HS (FL): I think I was a little early to the Castellanos bandwagon, as there wasn’t true scouting consensus about his value entering the spring. Some teams saw him as first round material, while others saw a future first baseman without enough raw power for the position. While the answers about his fielding haven’t been answered definitively, Castellanos has flat-out hit this spring. He is showing an advanced eye, plus raw power, and a plus hit tool, and he should be a middle of the order force in the long run. He’s gone from possible late first rounder to possible mid first rounder, and that’s agreed upon more now than it was a couple months ago.

Mike Wagner:

4-8 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/draft-tracker/2010/269779.html  - Mike Wagner, rhp, Centennial HS, Las Vegas - Wagner didn't make Baseball America's preseason high school Top 100 list, but he'd surely has pitched his way into Top 100 territory this spring. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound righthander is a part of San Diego's tremendous crop of recruits for next season. But his stuff has recently taken a step forward with a lot of scouts in attendance, and if he continues pitching like he has this spring, teams are going to do everything they can to make sure he doesn't get there. Wagner won a recent game against Arbor View High, 6-3, in front of 10 scouts. He threw 99 pitches (including 71 strikes) over his six innings of work, striking out seven without issuing a walk. He sat 91-95 mph with his fastball, including hitting 94 an impressive 18 times.

Daniel Bibona:

4-9 from: - http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/on-campus/2010/269792.html  - Top Senior - Daniel Bibona, lhp, UC Irvine - Bibona was a second-team All-American as a junior after going 12-1, 2.63 last year, but the Anteaters were fortunate to get him back for his senior year when he turned down a $115,000 bonus as a 16th-round pick by the Cardinals. He lasted that long in the draft because he is not big and he lacks premium fastball velocity, but good luck finding a college ace with better feel for pitching than Bibona. He also misses plenty of bats with his outstanding changeup, good slider and impeccable fastball command. As good as he was as a junior, Bibona might be even better as a senior, going 4-2, 2.54 with 60 strikeouts and 11 walks in 50 innings.
