5 4 4-8: - Jason Heyward, Foreign Born Players, Why They'll Win, Nellie The Philly... and Jose's Return

Jason Heyward:

Braves fans eager to commemorate Jason Heyward’s major league debut bought up more than 500 new T-shirts and jerseys bearing his name during Monday’s opener against the Cubs at Turner Field. That’s saying something, since the Heyward apparel didn’t go on sale until the fifth inning. By players’ association rule, a player’s apparel cannot be sold until he’s played in a major league game, and a game is not official until the fifth inning.

Foreign Born Players:

Two-hundred thirty-one (231) players on Opening Day rosters and disabled lists were born outside the 50 United States, it was announced Tuesday… The New York Mets have the most foreign-born players with a record total of 18. Five Clubs – the Chicago Cubs, the Colorado Rockies, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Texas Rangers – feature 10 foreign-born players apiece. The Mets have players from seven different countries and territories outside the United States: Canada, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico and Venezuela - biz of baseball

Why They’ll Win:

They do have Johan Santana and if he stays healthy he is usually good for 15-20 wins. Many are worried about his poor spring, but myworld has never known Santana to come out of spring smelling like an ace. David Wright will not allow himself to be limited by the Mets new ball park and he will approach the 30 homerun mark, proving last year’s numbers were a fluke. In fact, he will hit more roundtrippers than celebrated newcomer Jason Bay. Bay will provide good protection for Wright and will drive in runs. Francisco Rodriguez has lost the fastball of his youth, but he’s still got enough to rack up the saves. - MWOB

Nellie The Filly:

But to me, you can put it on guaranteed lock that the night the Mets are one game away from elimination, the Phillies will be on the schedule. And Nellie will start that game. And he'll summon every lord of baseball available in heaven to conjure up the greatest start of his career. And then he'll sign autographs for every one of the 43,647 in attendance in Philadelphia. And meanwhile, back in Queens, there will be a torch and a pitchfork for every Figueroa autograph signed that night at Omar Minaya's door demanding his head. - metstradamus

Jose's Return:

But all indications are that Reyes' exile in Port St. Lucie will end this week, and that the shortstop will bring his buoyant personality - and select possessions - back to Flushing on Saturday for a game against Washington. The best-case scenario for the Mets, who cannot activate Reyes before Saturday, is appearing likely after another positive update from Florida yesterday. Reyes, sidelined with a thyroid condition, played five innings in the field during a minor-league game, and went 2-for-5 with a ground-rule double. -  nydn
