Sandoval led off the game with a home run, his second of the season, giving lefty Angel Cuan a 1-0 lead to work with before stepping onto the mound. But the Jammers would battle back in the bottom of the fourth, as Sequoyah Stonecipher had a RBI triple which was followed by a Wilfredo Gimenez RBI single, to give Jamestown the 2-1 lead.
But Sandoval would strike again, driving home Will Cherry with a single in the fifth, tying the game. That would be the last run scored before Sandoval gave Brooklyn the lead in the ninth. The Cyclones added an insurance run when Kurt Steinhauer scored on a wild pitch later in the inning, putting the Coney Island team up 4-2.
Cuan, who received a no decision, was impressive once again in his fourth start, as the left-hander would go a season-best seven innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and three walks. The 21-year-old struck out three, and now has a 2.35 ERA, as he continues to be a force in the New York-Penn League.
Johan Figuereo was credited with the win after two solid innings out of the bullpen, giving the Cyclones clean frames in the eighth and ninth.
A 0-for-4 day dropped Darrell Ceciliani’s average from .403 to .380, but the centerfielder managed a stolen base after being hit by a pitch. First baseman Jeff Flagg and designated hitter Will Cherry each tallied two hits. Flagg slugged a double and a triple off of Jamestown pitching.
The rubber game of this three-game set will be played tomorrow night at Russell Diethrick Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
