Portland 8, Binghamton 4

from press release:

Chih-Hsien Chiang smashed a fourth-inning grand slam off Binghamton starter Robert Carson, which put Portland in control in the B-Mets 8-4 loss to the Sea Dogs in front of 5,106 fans at NYSEG Stadium Monday night. Carson was charged for eight runs over 4 1/3 innings to drop his home debut and third straight start.

Binghamton (52-51) struck first in the third inning against starter Blake Maxwell. After Mike Nickeas drew a leadoff walk, Raul Reyes sat on a 1-1 offering from the right-hander, sending it out to right for his sixth home run of the season to give the B-Mets a 2-0 lead.

The advantage was short-lived, however. Portland (51-51) got a leadoff single from Ray Chang starting the fourth. Luis Exposito pushed the runner up to third with a double to right and Yamaico Navarro brought both home with a two-run double to right, evening the score, 2-2.

Carson battled his command against the next two hitters, resulting in a pair of walks, which loaded the bases. After missing with his first pitch to Chiang, the left-hander grooved a fastball to the left-handed hitter, which Chiang deposited in the right-field parking lot for a grand slam. It was his seventh homer of the season and vaulted the Sea Dogs into a 6-2 lead.

Ryan Lavarnway extended that lead in the fifth, taking advantage of Carson’s third walk. The B-Mets starter walked Exposito to start the fifth. Two batters later, Lavarnway smashed his first Double-A homer, a no-doubt, two-run shot to left, extending the lead to six.

Eddie Kunz replaced Carson after the second gopher ball and fired 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Maxwell departed after five innings, tying his season-long. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits and tied a season-high with five strikeouts.

The B-Mets made some noise in the sixth with a two-out RBI double from Josh Satin and in the seventh when Jose Coronado laced his fourth homer of the season, but Binghamton would get no closer than four. It was Coronado’s first homer since April 22.

Ryne Lawson worked the final four innings in relief of Maxwell and was credited with his first save of the season.
