After Savannah scored four runs in the top of the first inning, the Lexington Legends came back with nine in the first three innings and went on
to beat the Sand Gnats 13-6 Tuesday night at Applebee's Park.
A double by leadoff hitter Wilfredo Tovar got Savannah started in wild first inning that included three hits, two walks and an error as the Sand Gnats sent 10 batters to the plate.
The Legends scored twice in the bottom of the first on three walks and Jonathan Meyer's two-out, two-RBI single. Savannah made it 5-2 in the second on a single by Robbie Shields, a sacrifice bunt by Cesar Puello and a double by Travis Ozga. The Legends answered again with two runs in the bottom of the second. Brian Kemp and Jose Altuve singled, and Jake Goebbert was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
After Pedro Martinez relieved starter Taylor Whitenton for Savannah, Kody Hinze singled to right field, scoring Kemp and Altuve to cut the lead to one at 5-4. Hinze had three RBI in the game, and leads the South Atlantic League with 73 for the season.
Savannah's final run came on a solo home run by Robbie Shields in the top of the seventh.
