LAST GAME: The B-Mets grabbed an early 4-0 lead in the first

two innings and held on to beat Altoona 4-3 courtesy of outstanding

bullpen work from four different hurlers Thursday

night at Blair County Ballpark. Josh Stinson allowed three runs

on seven hits over 5.1 innings to notch his sixth win. Curve

starter Bryan Morris was not as fortunate and exited after the

second inning. The right-hander was charged for four runs on

six hits over two innings to drop to 4-4 on the year. Binghamton

plated three in the first off him and a single run in the

second, courtesy of Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ 13th homer of the

season, an opposite-field blast to left. That proved to be

enough as Edgar Ramirez, Dylan Owen, Roy Merritt and Eddie

Kunz combined to throw the final 3.2 innings in two-hit fashion

to secure the series win. Kunz got Josh Harrison to fly out

to center with the tying run in scoring position to end the

game and nail down his third save of the year.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Eric Niesen will make his

13th start of the season tonight for Binghamton. He is coming

off his third outing in which he has not made it out of the

second inning. The southpaw gave up four runs on three hits

and walked four over 1.2 innings against Portland, July 4 at

NYSEG Stadium in a no-decision. Niesen is 4-3 with a 3.61

ERA over 47.1 innings. He spent a month on the disabled list

with a concussion April 26-May 26. The lefty led all Mets minor

leaguers with 134 strikeouts in 2009. He was the Mets’

third-round choice in 2007 out of Wake Forest and is considered

the No. 24 prospect in the Mets farm system by Baseball

America.

RHP Kyle Drabek will oppose the B-Mets in his team-leading

18th start of the year. He is coming off the finest start of his

career, July 4 versus New Britain. Drabek threw a nine-inning,

no-hitter to beat the Rock Cats, walking two and striking out

three in the process. The right-hander has garnered decisions

in all but one of his starts this year and is 8-8 with a 3.20 ERA

over 107 innings, the third-most in the Eastern League. Drabek

ranks seventh in the league in ERA and fourth in strikeouts

(80), walks (45) and average against (.219). He was

traded to Toronto in the Roy Halladay deal. Drabek was

drafted by the Phillies in the first round of the June 2006 draft

out of The Woodlands HS (TX).
