LAST GAME: The B-Mets ended a three-game losing streak
with a 4-3 win in the lidlifter of a doubleheader with Reading
before falling 5-4 in nine innings in the nightcap at First Energy
Stadium Saturday night. Eddie Kunz paved the way to
victory in the first game, tossing five innings of two-run work
for his seventh win of the season. Binghamton broke on top in
the first game courtesy of an error by R-Phils starter Yohan
Flande on a Kunz sac bunt in the fifth. Jose Coronado jumped
the lead to three with a two-run double following the error.
Reading answered with a two-run homer by Cody Overbeck.
However, Luke Montz got a run back in the next frame with an
RBI double. The proved instrumental as Manuel Alvarez would
give up a solo homer to Harold Garcia leading off the sixth.
Alvarez, however, buckled down to retire the final six men of
the game to notch the save. Reading took the second game
courtesy of a late-inning rally and a walk-off RBI single from
Garcia. Edgar Ramirez worked five, shutout innings but did not
factor in the decision.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon gets the
call for Binghamton in the finale of the series this afternoon.
He has won three consecutive starts, including a completegame
effort in his last start, August 24 versus New Britain in
Game 1 of a twin bill in which the lefty allowed just a run on
five hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts. Cohoon is 4-
3 with a 4.97 ERA over 11 starts (58 IP). He is 3-0 with a 2.10
ERA over four August starts (25.2 IP). Cohoon opened the
season with Savannah and racked up a 7-1 mark and a measly
1.30 ERA over 13 starts (90.1 IP). His ERA paced the
South Atlantic League, as did his three shutouts. Cohoon was
a New York-Penn League All-Star last season with Brooklyn
(SS-A) thanks to a 9-2 record and a 2.15 ERA over 92 innings.
The Mets drafted him in the 12th round of the June 2008
draft out of North Central Texas College.
RHP Chance Chapman will make a spot start for the R-Phils
this afternoon in place of J.C. Ramirez, who is being skipped
over due to injury. Chapman’s only other start this season
came May 9 versus Akron when he tossed four innings and
limited the Aeros to a run on two hits in a no-decision. He is 2-
2 with a 4.70 ERA over 44 innings with Reading. Chapman
missed six weeks time in May and June due to an oblique
strain. He appeared in 38 games for Reading last year and
went 7-1 with a 2.73 ERA over 52.2 innings. Philadelphia
drafted him in the 8th round of the June 2007 draft.
