LAST GAME: Altoona built a 9-0 lead after seven innings and
dodged a late charge from Binghamton to earn the sweep in
the three-game set with a 9-5 victory Sunday night at NYSEG
Stadium. Dylan Owen made the spot start in place of the recently-
promoted Josh Stinson and acquitted himself well with
four, strong innings of one-run work until a tumultuous fifth
inning led to his departure. He was charged with five runs
(four earned) over four-plus innings and the loss. Hector Gimenez
proved to be a thorn in the B-Mets side with a 3-for-5
performance including a homer, a double and three RBI. Tony
Watson was unflappable in his sixth start for the Curve. The
southpaw limited Binghamton to four hits and a walk over six
innings, while striking out a season-best eight for his fifth win.
Jon Malo paced the B-Mets’ 11-hit attack with three hits and
Brahiam Maldonado added a pair of doubles.
GAME 1 STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: LHP Mark Cohoon
aims for his third consecutive quality start tonight against the
Rock Cats. He worked six-plus innings and allowed two runs
on seven hits at New Hampshire August 18 to land his third
win. Cohoon is 3-3 with a 5.47 ERA over 51 innings with Binghamton.
Opponents are hitting a healthy .300 against the
southpaw. He opened the season with Savannah and racked
up a 7-1 mark and a measly 1.30 ERA over 13 starts (90.1
IP). His ERA paced the South Atlantic League, as did his three
shutouts. Cohoon was a New York-Penn League All-Star last
season with Brooklyn (SS-A) thanks to a 9-2 record and a 2.15
ERA over 92 innings. The Mets drafted him in the 12th round
of the June 2008 draft out of North Central Texas College.
RHP Chris Province will make his fourth start for the Rock Cats
tonight. He is coming off his finest start of the season August
18 versus Richmond when he allowed just a run on two hits
over 6.2 innings for his sixth win. Province is 6-5 with a 4.89
ERA over 77.1 innings. He opened the season in the bullpen
for New Britain and was moved into the starting rotation to
start the month of August. Province spent 2009 in Portland’s
bullpen and made a career-best 43 appearances, racking up
a 2-4 mark and a 2.60 ERA over 79.2 innings. Minnesota
acquired him in a trade for Boof Bonser December 10, 2009
