B-Mets Miss Chance to Sweep New Britain, 8-6


Binghamton rallied to within two in the ninth, but stranded the tying runs on base when New Britain closed out the 8-6 victory Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets took two out of three from the Rock Cats to claim the series win.



With two scoreless relief innings in two, Carlos Gutierrez remained on for the ninth to try for his third save. Luke Montz led off the stanza with a seeing-eye single to center. After Jose Coronado replaced Montz at first on a fielder’s choice, Jordany Valdespin reached on a single, putting two aboard. Josh Satin battled Gutierrez to a full count before hitting a flyout to center for the second out. The right-hander then walked Sean Ratliff to load the bases for Zach Lutz. Lutz responded with a two-run single to left despite being down to his final strike, bringing Binghamton with three, 8-5.



Billy Bullock spelled Gutierrez with the game in question and promptly gave up an RBI single, to trim the lead to two, 8-6. However, Raul Reyes, who represented the winning run, struck out looking to end the ballgame. Bullock was credited with his 12th save for nailing it down.



New Britain tallied in the first inning against Robert Carson, who was making his eighth start of the season for Binghamton (62-66). Estarlin de los Santos doubled to left with one out. After Chris Parmelee grounded out to short, Evan Bigley ripped a single inside the line at third to chase home the Rock Cats’ first run.



The B-Mets responded in the bottom of the first with the help of a New Britain (39-91) miscue. Coronado led off the inning with a single off starter Bobby Lanigan. Valdespin followed with a chopper over the head of third baseman Juan Portes to join Coronado on base. Satin then hit into what appeared to be a double play on a groundball to short, however, second baseman Steve Singleton shorted the throw to first, which ended up in the first base seats allowing Coronado to score the tying run.



The Rock Cats broke the deadlock in the fourth. Parmelee walked to lead off the frame and Bigley joined him on base with a single, leading to Juan Portes, who slugged a three-run blast to left-center on an 0-2 pitch. The shot was Portes’ seventh and vaulted New Britain into a 4-1 lead. Steve Singleton became the fourth straight man to reach with a double to the track in right following the bomb. After retiring the next two, Carson gave up an RBI single to Tobias Streich, stretching the lead to four, 5-1.



Brahiam Maldonado supplied an answer in the last of the fourth. Raul Reyes singled to center off Rock Cats’ reliever Mike McCardell. Maldonado brought him home with a monstrous opposite-field blast to right-center on a 2-2 fastball from the righty. It was the outfielder’s 11th homer and cut the deficit in half, 5-3.
