At The Ballpark, Bryce Harper, Erik Surkamp, Alex Rodriguez, Matt Harvey

At The Ballpark:

“At the Ballpark,” a baseball-themed collection, is launching today. It is part of The New Yorker Reader, a series of anthologies of content culled from the magazine’s rich archive in an easy-to-read format for the iPad. The New Yorker Reader collections will be available to all digital subscribers on the iPad as part of their subscription and to non-subscribers for $2.99 each in the iTunes store. “At the Ballpark” features an introduction by the New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik, and there are eight features: Niven Busch Lou Gehrig, John Updike on Ted Williams, Roger Angell on Bob Gibson and on the 2009 Yankees, Susan Orlean on Cuban baseball, David Grann on Ricky Henderson, Ben McGrath on Manny Ramirez, and Jeffrey Toobin on Fred Wilpon; four Talk of the Town stories—Rex Lardner on baseball school, Adam Platt on Hideki Irabu’s translator, Nick Paumgarten on Yankee Stadium’s post-9/11 bag check, and Ben McGrath on the beanball king; and one poem, “Baseball and Writing,” by Marianne Moore. - http://baseballmusings.com/

Bryce Harper:

He went 0-for-4, he struck out twice, he was the recipient of a smattering of boos, and he's still the best prospect in baseball. This was one game, folks, and if you weren't there early, or have access to those that did, you didn't see or hear about the pre-game batting practice session that one scout classified as, “Simply awesome.” Jason Parks sent a text message and mentioned it was “the wrath of God.” You did get to see Harper’s other tools, including a 4.3 time down the line and a very strong throw from left. While Sunday's game may have been the first time many had actually seen him play, the 76 games he's played this year are evidence that he is a once-in-a-generation talent. - http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=14491

Eric Surkamp:

San Francisco Giants fans have their eye on lefty Eric Surkamp, and with good reason. The southpaw has a 1.61 ERA in 89 innings for Double-A Richmond, with a 102/28 K/BB and 74 hits allowed. All of his component ratios are excellent. Drafted in the sixth round in 2008 from North Carolina State, Surkamp's season ended early last year due to a dislocated hip, but he's shown no ill effects this season. He now has a career 2.92 ERA in 339 innings with a 402/94 K/BB ratio and 305 hits allowed. Although his component ratios are those of a power pitcher, his fastball has just average velocity. He uses a curveball and changeup, both solid-to-plus, and his command is a big asset. He's had no problems adapting to Double-A and should appear in the majors within the next year at his current pace. - http://www.minorleagueball.com/2011/7/11/2268895/minor-league-notes-july-11-2011#storyjump

Alex Rodriguez:

Alex Rodriguez’s surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee “went as expected” on Monday, according to the Yankees. He’s expected to miss four to six weeks. The Yankees said the third baseman was operated by Dr. Lee Kaplan at the University of Miami. Kaplan will also “oversee the initial rehabilitation,” the team said. - http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/07/09/a-rod-has-knee-tear-could-miss-month-if-surgery-is-needed

Matt Harvey:

There is no sense of entitlement for Harvey, a top-10 Draft pick whom many Mets fans have already crowned their savior. Burning through the Florida State League and advancing to Double-A Binghamton within his first three months as a professional, Harvey is the organization's most heralded pitching prospect since Mike Pelfrey, who has yet to fulfill his own considerable promise. If the Mets are to remain competitive as the core of their 2006 playoff roster continues to disperse, Harvey will almost certainly play a significant role. - http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110710&content_id=21725900&vkey=news_nym&c_id=nym&partnerId=aw-6476307693672967214-1037
