B-Mets, New Hampshire Spilt Doubleheader

Binghamton lost the first game of a twinbill 5-3 against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, but responded with a 1-0 victory in the nightcap tonight at NYSEG Stadium.

After the Fisher Cats plated a run off starter Brandon Moore in the first inning, Allan Dykstra responded by launching his eleventh home run of the year off Chad Jenkins in the second.

Jonathan Diaz’s RBI single and Justin Jackson’s run-scoring double gave the Fisher Cats a short-lived two run lead in the fourth. Binghamton quickly responded in their next turn at-bat. Jordany Valdespin singled to start the frame and came home on Josh Satin’s double to left field.

Binghamton took advantage of shaky New Hampshire defense to tie the game. Allan Dykstra roped a single to right field to move Satin to third. The throw from Moises Sierra in right was cut off by Mike McDade. McDaded attempted to throw behind Dykstra at first, but his toss bounced past Diaz covering the base and rolled down the right field line. Satin scampered home with the tying run.

The game remained deadlocked until the eighth inning. New Hampshire collected three hits off John Lujan and took advantage of throwing errors from Raul Reyes and Dusty Ryan to score a pair of runs and take the lead.

Binghamton had no answer, going down in order against Bobby Korecky for the reliever’s sixth save of the year. B.J. LaMura earned his fourth win after throwing a scoreless seventh. Lujan was saddled with his second loss.

In the nightcap, the B-Mets scratched out just three hits but got solid pitching to earn the victory. Roy Merritt took the ball for his third start of the year and continued his success as a starter. The left-hander allowed four hits and walked just one over four scoreless innings. In 13 innings as a starter this year, Merritt has only allowed one run.

While Merritt delivered on the mound, the B-Mets offensive struck quickly in the second. Dusty Ryan led off the frame by ripping a drive off Yohan Pino to deep centerfield for his first triple since August 2009.

Salomon Manriquez wasted little time and brought Ryan home with a ground out to short. It would prove to be all the offense Binghamton would need.

Edgar Ramirez took over and tossed a perfect fifth before running into a jam in the sixth. He handed out a two-out walk to John Tolisano and gave up a hard-hit single to Jonathan Diaz. After uncorking a wild pitch to push both runners up, the right-hander induced Craig Stansberry to pop out in foul territory to Satin to end the inning.

Erik Turgeon rounded out Binghamton’s fourth shutout win of the season by tossing a perfect seventh. It was his fifth save of the season and made a winner of Ramirez for the first time. Yohan Pino suffered his second loss.

The B-Mets (36-56) continue their series against the Fisher Cats tomorrow night at 7:05pm. LHP Robert Carson (2-7, 4.40) will face off against RHP Henderson Alvarez (4-4, 3.25). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
