Mets Sign LHP Gustavo Chacin, OF Fernando Perez to Minor League Contracts,
Assign to Bisons Roster July 18, 2011-
The New York Mets announced today that they have signed free agent LHP GUSTAVO CHACIN and OF FERNANDO PEREZ to minor league deals. Both players are active for the Bisons game tonight against the Syracuse Chiefs at Alliance Bank Stadium.
To make roster room, RHP JACK EGBERT has been transferred to the Double-A Binghamton Mets.
OF FERNANDO MARTINEZ has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to July 16.
Chacin, 30, began the season with the Oklahoma City RedHawks of the Pacific Coast League and was 3-6 with a 5.13ERA in 18 relief outings and nine starts for the Houston Astros’ Triple-A affiliate (66.2IP, 81H, 24BB, 37). He was released by the Astros on July 14. Chacin has pitched in 102 career major league games (58 starts) with Toronto (2004-2007) and Houston (2010). Originally signed as a 17-year old undrafted free agent by the Blue Jays in 1998, the southpaw finished 5th in American League Rookie-of-the-Year voting in 2005 after going 13-9 with a 3.72ERA in 34 games in his first full major league season. Perez, 28, was most recently in the Chicago Cubs organization following an eight-player trade this off-season that included sending RHP Matt Garza from Tampa Bay to the Cubs. Perez played 76 games with Triple-A Iowa this year and hit .238 (60-252) with 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 20RBI. He was also 17 of 19 in stolen bases before being released by the Cubs on July 8. Originally a 7th round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2004, Perez played a combined 41 major league games with the Rays in 2008 and 2009 and hit 234 (22-94) with three home runs and 10RBI. Egbert was 0-2 with a 4.50ERA in five games and three starts with the Bisons. Martinez was has hit .254 (45-177) with seven home runs and 25RBI in 51 games this season.
