The St. Lucie Mets could not hold off the Tampa Yankees offense dropping the final game of a four-game series by a score of 10-1. The loss puts the Mets at 10-7 on the second half of the season and 48-39 overall.
What began as a possible pitcher’s duel, things got out of hand for the Mets in the fifth inning. With the game tied 1-1, the Yankees put up an eight spot in the top half of the fifth inning putting the game well out of reach for St. Lucie. Greg Peavey got the start for the Mets and cruised through the first two innings. After allowing a run in the third, Rylan Sandoval answered for the Mets hitting his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot making it 1-1. The Yankees rattled off seven hits in the top of the fifth inning chasing Peavey from the game. Trailing 9-1 after five innings, the Mets managed only two more base runners the rest of the way. Tampa added a solo home run in the sixth inning capping off the scoring at 10-1.
Greg Peavey took the loss lasting only 4.2 innings allowing eight runs, seven earned on ten hits while striking out four. Brandon Sage allowed two runs over 2.1 innings of relief. Jeff Kaplan pitched the final two innings keeping the Yankees off the scoreboard allowing only one hit. St. Lucie managed only four hits. Rylan Sandoval accounted for the only offensive firepower with his solo home run in the third inning. Stefan Welch reached base twice and Francisco Pena and Cesar Puello accounted for the final two Mets hits.
The St. Lucie Mets are off Tuesday but return to action Wednesday night as they head to Lakeland to take on the Flying Tigers. Darin Gorski will get the start for the Mets. Gorski is 8-0 with a league leading 1.56 ERA in 18 appearances, 12 starts. He has struck out 96 while walking 20 with opposing hitters batting .218 against him in 86.2 innings of work.
