Mack's Mock Pick - # 94 - RHP - Glenn Albanese

Glenn Albanese

Mack's spin -

A recovering TJS pitcher, Albanese continues to slowing work his fastball back to the T95 range. Also, has an above average slider.

There is a lot of talent here but what you are drafting is the projection, nut the current stat line.

I have him as my 39th RHP.

Albanese missed some time with Tommy John but is 100% healthy now, and looks even better than before. A high velocity Fastball reaching mid-upper 90s consistently. Mixing in a Above-average Slider with Plus spin but comes with some inconsistencies holding it back from a true Plus pitch. The 3rd offering, a league Average Changeup, shows some feel for it, but does again need to put further development into it for a consistent 3rd pitch. The upside is there with showing those improved secondaries to rise as high as a mid Round 2 pick.

1-23-21 - NCAA-

The highest-upside rotation candidate is fourth-year sophomore righty Glenn Albanese, who has been by far the buzziest player in Cards camp this fall. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Albanese arrived at Louisville injured and redshirted in 2018 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, then logged just 9.2 innings in 2019 while working his way back. He carved out a role as a key bullpen arm in 2020, posting a 2.08 ERA in five appearances, but it’s worth noting that even on opening weekend at Ole Miss his fastball topped out at just 91 mph. He was getting stronger as the spring progressed, and McDonnell believes he would have continued climbing draft boards had the season played out. Instead, he went to the Northwoods League this summer and really started to come into his own.

Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted

Age At Draft: 22.7

Albanese has steadily trended upward since recovering from Tommy John surgery that kept him out of his 2018 freshman season at Louisville. He was on a draft track in 2020 but only managed to throw 8.2 innings in five relief appearances as the season was cut short. In that brief stint, Albanese posted a 2.08 ERA with 18 strikeouts (18.7 K/9) and five walks (5.2 BB/9). With limited collegiate track record (just 18.1 total innings with Louisville), Albanese went undrafted but continued to pitch well in the Northwoods League last summer, where he posted a 1.69 ERA as a starter in 26.2 innings, still racking up strikeouts at an impressive clip (16.2 K/9). Albanese has a big, 6-foot-6, 220-pound frame and was in the mid 90s last fall, with impressive downward angle thanks to his frame. He also throws a high-spin slider. While Albanese will be 23 shortly after the draft, he’s a potential riser this spring as he continues to add strength and get further away from TJ.

Although Louisville is chockfull of good arms, fifth year righty Glenn Albanese has really stood out from the crowd. Many guys on the team seem to agree he’s got the best stuff on the staff. He’s touched 98 this Fall and has showcased a potential plus breaking ball.
