Excellent post Ray
Here's my visceral on all this.
When you have a really good hitting team (like this one from seasons past) and with younger homegrown batters who are proven, then that possibly suggests to me that there may exist a "non-player personnel" type of a problem.
Here's some other "stuff" I have seen too.
1. Why are they not giving C James McCann more game rest? Tomas Nido can man the dish, and probably hit some more as well. He is still young enough for this team to expect that from him with more game time. He can.
2. When a good MLB team goes into a winless slump (most teams normally do 3-4 times a season) and the team's manager is throwing younger MLB untried starters out there ahead of the team's more veteran ones (with more experience and success) I tend to see that as a possible problem because those long relievers could be stretched out to cover 5-6 innings in time and become instrumental to the teams success with key starters out hurt.
3. When a team has a player with strong and proven hitting capability prior, go into a pronounced batting slump (two Mets players come to mind here) it does not matter how large their weekly paychecks are or just how long they were successful prior to this slump. The fact is that they are struggling now and they absolutely need to be dropped down in the batting order with no exception being made. It worked well every time with Amed Rosario. It's a game of confidence really.
But to me, the best way to address a slumping situation may actually be for a batter to simply break everything down to the basic fundamental mechanics of his swing, the one he has been using forever. Doing this however long it may take to make certain that the batter's swing mechanics are truly smooth and consistent again. Then from this fundamental point, work the power amperage slowly back up as that batter goes along. In other words, start out trying to hit a basic single just over the infielders heads. Do this for awhile until it becomes imprinted memory. From here, slowly work your swing back up to an increased power capability position.
A swing that is pulling everything, is not an ideal swing to have. Ideally, you want to be able to hit the ball to all three fields, and maybe where it is pitched. Pulling everything is simply the sign of an overly anxious batter. When not in a slump, it can actually produce extra base hits. Confidence when all is clicking.
4. Base running. Teams that struggle to produce runs need to pay more attention to their team's baserunning, because they need to create more scoring opportunities. It can also be a tension breaker for that team in a slump, because when implemented correctly (and at the right time) it adds to that team's confidence. This team's chemistry had been outstanding in seasons past. There is no reason to expect that it won't be again. Confidence and chemistry.
