1999 |
In a twin bill sweep of Milwaukee, Mets' third baseman
Robin Ventura becomes the first major league player to hit a grand slam in
both ends of a doubleheader. The infielder also hit a pair of 'grand salamis'
in a game against Texas while playing for the 1995 White Sox. |
2000 |
After being released earlier in the month by the Mets for
not hustling, Rickey Henderson, in his first at-bat for the Mariners, hits
his record 76th career leadoff home run, a shot off Esteban Yan in the team's
4-3 loss to Tampa Bay at Safeco Field. With the round-tripper, the future

Terry Collins, a 67 year-old baseball lifer, passes Davey

reaching 1,013 games with the team. The oldest skipper in the majors, sees
his charges hang on to a 7-5 victory when Addison Reed strikes out Angel
pinch-hitter Danny Espinosa on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded after three
runs have scored in the top of the ninth inning at Citi Field. |

Alonso now hurting, Tarpley and McWilliams to the COVID IL, the hits just keep on coming for the Mets.
Tom - I think it is time for Megill to come to the Majors.
Cameron Maybin's name has a nice ring to it. But the $1 Maybin gambit failed. Get rid of him. He goes 0-4, 3 Ks, after hitting .103 in AAA. How foolish. Lightning did not strike in a bottle - try another bottle.
Why did the Mets lose last night? Lee and Maybin going 0 for 7 with 6 Ks. Both must go.
Lee is 0-8 with 8 Ks. Add in his spring stats and he is 0 for 24 with 17 Ks. Is that some kind of a joke? I've never seen anything that bad. Like, ever. Have you?
Try Drew Ferguson, who has at least been a good AAA hitter, and is hitting .265 after 3 hits last night.
Corey Kluber throws yet another Yank no hitter - but if I got to pitch to Lee and Maybin, I could throw one myself right now, especially when you add in hitless Hager.
Nido for President. John from Albany is in charge of his campaign.
And Loup was like bad soup last night.
One last thing: I am officially tired of .189 Lindor - a quarter of the season is over. Are you kidding me? Every passing day, that extension looks like a huger and huger mistake. Hopefully, I don't get to hugest.
John, calling up Megill would be different - it would be calling up someone who is actually competent. Whether he is ready or not, internally, given he's thrown so few innings, that is up to his make up. Flexen you may recall was great in AA the year he was called up but got torched with the Mets. I think Megill would be different.
Peterson impresses - to a point. Then he folds. He needs to toughen up.
Put Mazeika at 1B if Alonso is hurt. Dom's bat is needed in the outfield. At least Mazeika doesn't strike out much. Some endorsement.
I have never seen anything like this.
One stat that I was not able to get to is that the Mets are only the 5th highest team with players on the IL. The toll from last year keeps ticking.
I loved the Shohei Ohtani bunt base hit - he also clearly has blazing foot speed. Boy, I would have signed him for 10 years, $341MM in a heartbeat. The other guy seems more and more like 10 years, $34 million would have been the right amount.
John, Kluber had a non-year in 2020 and he seems pretty healthy.
I think back to 1969 - Mets used very few players - none of them worked out intensively, I don't think. Maybe guys do TOO much.
