Mets Links:

Mets 5 Phillies 4 (Game Day and Box Score): Brandon Nimmo CF 0 for 4, 2 Ks; Francisco Lindor SS 0 for 3, 1 HBP, 1 run scored; Jeff McNeil 2B 0 for 3, 1 run scored, 1 K; Pete Alonso 1B 2 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI; Michael Conforto RF 2 for 4, HR, 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored; J.D. Davis 3B 1 for 3, 1 RBI, 2 Ks; Dominic Smith LF 2 for 4; James McCann C; 1 for 4, 1 K; Taijuan Walker P o for 1 – 1 K – 6 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs – all earned, 4 Ks, 1 HR; Aaron Loup 1 inning no runs, 1 walk, 1 K; Trevor May 1 inning, 1 hit, no runs; Edwin Diaz 1 inning, no runs, no hits, no walks, 2 Ks.

Mike Puma NY Post: “There was the four-run rally in the first, Conforto’s go-ahead homer in the ninth and a needed Mets victory, 5-4 over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The Mets snapped a three-game losing streak, finally showing a semblance of offense.”

Metstradamus: “A two run HR by Alec Bohm tied the game off Walker, and this was looking like a game that would have sunk the Mets lower than they were even last night, after losing on a two run strikeout to a team with no Bryce Harper, Didi Gregorius, and J.T. Realmuto.”

Newsday: “With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, second base ump Jose Navas ruled Andrew McCutchen ran out of the baseline to avoid an attempted tag by shortstop Francisco Lindor on what became an inning-ending double play. Replays showed McCutchen ran in a straight line from first to second.”

SNY.TV: “With Loup, May, and Diaz tossing three scoreless innings of relief, the Mets bullpen has not allowed a run in 19 consecutive innings.”

SNY.TV: What's next - David Peterson will take the mound for the Mets as they look to take two out of three from Philly, who will have Zach Eflin on the bump at 7:00 p.m.

Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Billy Martin’s season-sparking trick may be worth try for Mets, Yankees.  Billy pulled names out of a hat to make out the Yankees lineup after a 2-8 start.  It helped the Yankees relax as they went on to a WS title that year.

Rising Apple: Former Mets Bartolo Colon, Tim Tebow just can’t quit playing sports.

Mike’s Mets: 98 Pound Weaklings.

1968

Mets hitter Bud Harrelson becomes the first batter in baseball history to gain a 3-0 ball-strike count advantage from the on-deck circle when umpire Ed Vargo penalizes Phillies reliever John Boozer for going to his mouth inside the 18-foot circle of the mound. Philadelphia manager Gene Mauch, incensed about the ball one call, orders his pitcher to do it again for ball two, and then again for ball three, which promptly gets his right-hander and himself thrown out of the game, a 3-0 loss to New York at Shea Stadium.

1983

Jose Oquendo makes his major league debut, grounding into a force out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss to Houston. The 19 year-old rookie shortstop, born on July 4, 1963, is the first person to play for the Mets who is younger than the franchise, which started in 1962.

2008

Jose Reyes is thrown out at home plate in an unusual attempt to complete the cycle with an inside-the-park homer. The shortstop's four hits pace the Mets' 7-2 win over the Diamondbacks, the club's 14th victory in the last 15 games played against Arizona at Chase Field.

Baseball Reference:

1987: After having missed spring training and the first month of the season because of collusion, Montreal Expos outfielder Tim Raines debuts by going 4 for 5, including a 10th-inning grand slam, in an 11 - 7 win over the New York Mets.

2010: The Phillies take over first place in the NL East by beating Mets ace Johan Santana like a rag doll. Santana gives up 10 runs, including 8 in the 4th inning, which he fails to complete. With the Mets leading 5 - 3, he issues a two-out bases-loaded walks to his opposite, Jamie Moyer, then Shane Victorino blasts a grand slam to open the floodgates. Chase Utley adds a two-run shot to chase Santana; Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard had homered earlier against him. The Phillies win, 11 - 5.

2019: Noah Syndergaard of the Mets pitches a complete game shutout and also homers off Tyler Mahle for the game's only run as he defeats the Reds, 1 - 0. The last player to have managed that particular feat had been Bob Welch, back in 1983.

The Bud Harrelson story from 1968 is a chuckle...
