A FEELING OF DEJA VU
Don’t ask me why...
Something prompted me to look at former Met Eric Campbell’s stats.
Who does that? Well, me, I do that, with no apologies.
Nice Mets debut in 2014 by Eric the Red, but in his last two seasons with the Mets, his slash line was a mighty sub par .188/.302/.268 in 294 PAs.
The Mets no doubt we’re glad he didn’t have a long term contract and that they could move on without him easily.
Heck, after that dreadful hitting, I was happy to see him sent packing.
That slash line of Eric’s reminded me of someone else’s...but who could it be? Head scratcher....But...
Lightbulbs are great...my lightbulb went off and I realized who it was.
His 2021 slash so far in 150 plate appearances through Monday was .185/.304/.274, very close to those of Eric Campbell above.
One small difference:
The second guy is under contract for oh, about 10.75 more years and owed almost $360 million.
They clearly can’t move on without him easily.
So he better snap out of this Eric Campbell imitation.
In a huge way. Pronto.
The second player’s name?
I’m sure you can guess.
Hint: Rhymes with Alcindor.
Well, that guy had 2 hits Tuesday night. So maybe all "Campbell Concerns" are fleeting and ridiculous.
Maybe the unnamed guy above will play like a Cleveland version of Lindor from now on.
We need that guy in order to stay in first place for every day from now until season's end. After all, second place sucks.
Question:
Do all the Edwin Diaz haters still hate him? I sure don’t. When he comes in, I am not nervous. I EXPECT success.
Johneshwy Fargas looking good so far.
Khalil Lee though is looking quite overmatched. May he learn from it, for when he soon returns to the minors.
And may the legions of walking wounded become the walking healthy ASAP. We need guys back in days, not weeks.
When the Mets acquire a "4 for 39 with 14 Ks in AAA" Cameron Maybin, it is clear the outfield talent in the Mets' AA and AAA level beyond Fargas is essentially nonexistent - at least right now. And Tim Tebow retired. So did Julio Franco, or he might be helpful.
Hats off to Tomas Nido, who I have often criticized for a lack of hitting. HUGE HR LAST NIGHT. Tomas should split catching duties with McCann. Nido has 100% earned it. As has the $40 million man, who has earned less time.
This team is in first place at 20-16. One factor in the Mets' favor is that they have played 6 more road games than home-sweet-home games so far. The Mets are somehow first despite a Mets injured list that probably has never been this crowded in mid-May. And in first despite a dearth of offense.
SMH. SMH. SMH.
LETS GO METS.
LASTLY - but not leastly:
I am WAY beyond impressed with Kevin Pillar.
Aren't you?
So VERY glad he is on our side.

Tom,
Yes, as a person who has defended Nido countless times here, I'm glad to see you opening your eyes. But it's not about batting average. His qualities for the team, for the pitchers, for the clubhouse, are evident.
That said: Don't overreact. McCann is #1, still. But now that we are in a regular schedule, Nido should continue to get regular starts, maybe 1 out of 3, and we'll see how that goes. I was pleased when I saw him in the lineup last night after his 3-4 night.
Personally I'd go with McCann tonight. Maybe it becomes a 60-40 split. No need to "decide" now. As I've always said, the players decide. The job for a manager is to watch and recognize what's happening.
BTW, Lindor quietly had an EXCELLENT game last night. Two hits. A clutch DP in the 8th that was Gold Glove caliber. And he almost single-handedly manufactured a run when he doubled, crossed to 3rd on a slow grounder to SS, and scored on a SF fly.
Don't get too caught up in the numbers and creating false equivalancies.
Pete, once again, looks lost and miserable. I feel like he's got a tendency to think "I've got to be the man!" and ties himself into knots. That said, good sac fly. He seems unable to square up a fastball.
Lee is overmatched, needs to go away; I like Fargas.
I hate these bullpen games. It may get you through that day, but it taxes the pen too much and, I think, has a bad longterm effect.
May looks like he could use a few days off.
That said: Bullpen depth is great. The starting depth -- remember everyone falling over themselves praising Sandy for his depth -- we got Eickoff, Lucchesi, Yamamoto! -- is not there. The only real starting depth is young talent in the minors. Maybe Szapucky will earn a shot this year; maybe not.
To be clear: The Mets AA and AAA teams are a disgrace and this is totally, 100% on Sandy Alderson's watch. His guys, his drafts, his program when he was GM for 7+ years. At least St. Lucie is decent, but that's Brodie, right?
What a great win.

Agree on your thoughts on AAA & AA.
AA and AAA are hitting disasters, .220 and .204, and some of them are here with the Mother Ship.
I am no longer a Nido skeptic - I was close to not becoming one last year when due to highly unfortunate timing, Nido got COVID, ending his 2020.
He's done enough to convince me - he seems more and more like a real asset by the day.
We need some real innings from our next starter. DO not wear out the pen.
The Nationals' AA team is hititng .152. Just saying. It can (almost) always be worse. Rumble Ponies have them by 52 points.
Nido won a batting title in St Lucie so it's in him and I'm starting him till he cools off. How can a guy named Johneshwy Fargas not be HOF caliber O.K. back to earth but lets give him a real shot too remember TC is not our manager thank God.
