Tom Brennan - DSL DANDIES; New MLB Farm Rankings

Who’s Hot, Who’s Not?

The two Mets developmental teams have now played a substantial number of games. Stats start to be indicative.

Who is showing some statistical promise?

Hitting-wise (thru Monday), if you merged them all into one team, they would be amazing.

9 of them stand out, for the DSL blue and orange…

DSL Blue Mets and DSL Orange Mets:

Jeremy Rodriguez, SS Post-trade, 8 G, 24 AB, 9 RBI, .458/.583/.708, 3 K, 1 SB

Branny de Oleo SS 44 G, 159 AB, 3 HR, 25 RBI, .302/.387/.472, 17 K, 6 SB

Jeffry Rosa RF 39 G,126 AB, 14 HR, 34 RBI, .286/.413/.714, 38 K, 1 SB

Anthony Baptist CF 27 G 82 AB, 2 HR, 15 RBI, .280/.450/.476, 21 K, 9 SB

Jostyn Almonte RF 41 G, 135 AB, 6 HR, 27 RBI, .311/.427/.526, 36 K, 13 SB

Heriberto Rincon CF 43 G, 148 AB, 1 HR, 20 RBI, .318/.408/.400, 33 K, 16 SB

Julio Zayas C 46 G, 166 AB, 7 HR, 42 RBI, .295/.351/.506, 22 K, 1 SB. RBI Guy.

Lewis Castillo 3B 35 G, 119 AB, 12 RBI, .303/.385/.378, 10 K, 4 SB

Chris Larez SS 24 G, 84 AB, 1 HR, 13 RBI, .274/.351/.405, 29 K, 9 SB

Nice combo of power, averages, and speed.

Of course, a guy hitting .400 in the DSL mighty be lucky right now to hit .040 if promoted straight to the big league level, but the journey has to start somewhere.

And for these 9, it has started well.

Hopefully, at least one or two make it in 4-5 years.

Keep in mind the league still has 3 .400+ non-Mets hitters who rarely strike out…THOSE GUYS, were they on the Mets, I’d be effusive about, in terms of future MLB ceiling.

BUT THERE ARE METS DSL PITCHERS TOO…

Only 3 from the 2 teams jump out in a hitting-friendly league:

Franklin Gomez 4-3, 2.45, 44 IP, 61 K, 1.11 WHIP. Then….

Gomez debuted strongly in the FCL on Tuesday - 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 7 Ks.

WOW…good for him.

Franyel Diaz 2-2, 2.41, 41 IP, 52 K. 1.24 WHIP. A 6’7” dude.

Lucas Gordillo 1-2, 1.41, 32 IP, 47 K, 1.34 WHIP (maybe the next Lucas Giolito?)

There you have it, folks, your DSL DANDIES.

Oh, one more DSL hitter note:

If you’re pulling for Alex Ramirez and also miss Justin Verlander, then follow 6’3” Justin Ramirez, 18 year old lefty hitting OF in the DSL, who has gone 11 for his last 30, with just 4 Ks, boosting him to .239 and has 28 RBIs and 19 XBH in 188 at bats - and he’s 18, which I already said. He turns 19 just before spring training 2024.

SOON…A LOOK AT THE FINER FCL METS FELLAS, RESULTS-WISE.

Finally…New MLB farm rankings are out:

New MLB farm system rankings.  With all the acquisitions, the Mets are still just 11th, while Yanks are 21st, Atlanta 27th.

Baltimore has been and still is first in farm ranking, and have a great record.

Oh, to be an Orioles fan.

Great decade lies ahead.  Dynastic? Perhaps.

DJ STEWART:

2 HRs Wednesday after a pinch HR Tuesday, plus an excellent throw from RF to help cut down Cutch at the plate.

Have we found our 4/5 outfielder for 2024?

Stewart in his MLB career now has 30 HRs in 573 ABs, 81 RBIs, and .215.  Like Schwarber without the price tag.  Including his AAA numbers this year, 20 HRs in 234 ABs, not shabby.

Cohen can use a little cheap help for 2024. This DJ is having a better year than pricey DJ Lemahieu, too. Why not?

TO THE TUNE OF ROLL OVER, BEETHOVEN…

I’m gonna write a little letter, and mail it to my local DJ
Tell him keep on homerin’,and you’ll play everyday
Those homers we’re cravin’
So hit another bomb today

Stewart needs to take all of Vogey's at bats from now on.

Tom Brennan said...

Apesquat, true.

DJ is not a gazelle, but he can at least run and field. Vogey can’t do either. Lower DJ OBP, but more slugging. I am OK with that. PlayDJ a lot, see if he should be a part of 2024.

Yankees finding out Braves ain’t chopped chicken. Yanks unlikely to reach playoffs. Misery loves company.

For,er Yankee prospect rips Yankee farm development: “Here’s all you need to know,” Ruta said. “In 2020, before COVID hit spring training we played a game called ‘pitchers vs hitters,’ the only way to score a point was to walk or hit a ball 95 mph-plus. There’s no baseball being taught there anymore. No baserunning, moving runners, fundamentals, etc.”

Morning Tom

I happen to think that the top DSL prospect is CF Anthony Baptist who has finally found the groove.

Spent the young season batting around. 200 and is trending to end ip over .300

Great for DJ Stewart. This is why you need a system full of prospects. You never know who is going to translate their skills to the big league. Some work out, some don't. Hope DJ is on his way to working out. He is only average in RF, but if he could become a power hitting DH, the Mets would have an advantage in that slot that they have not held since the NL took up the rule.

Tom Brennan said...

Yep, Mack, Baptist is coming on strong, andisa reported speed burner.

It is a little unfair comparing these guys as I have, as some are only 17 and some are 19, a huge age difference, the older guys should do better just for that reason. Also, some guys are first year DSL, some 2nd year.

I like Zayas because he is a 17 year old RBI machine, while catching a good number of his games. It will be interesting to see what he does at age 19.

Tom

Here's something interesting

We argue all the time what is more important.

Bats or arms

So... currently, IF YOU WERE MAKING OUT 7 OUT OF 10 TIMES...

7-10. .300

You would have the 10TH top batting average in THE LEAGUE

Arms?

If you currently had an ERA under 3.00 you would be ranked 5TH in the ENTIRE LEAGUE

Under 3.50?

20th in THE LEAGUE

Average amount of starters in league: 600

So

No bats and no arms

This is the irrelevant game we write about

Well..

Call me in 4 years and let's see how they are doing

Of course first check on line for my obituary notice

Mack you have to hang in there with us at least till we win a WS! Remember the joke in the 60's that we would land on the moon before we won a WS and dam we did it so anything is possible right. Misery loves company can have it's benefits. Now having said that we all know Max and JV will lead their teams deep into the playoffs and all the recent new prospects will have All-Star careers right? Hope springs eternal.

You're right Gary

I just wonder if a Gaylord Perry or a Niekro or a Koosman, craftsmen, could succeed today as much as in their day. You make a mistake at 92 in 1970, it got hit 380 feet. Now it’s 430 feet.

Sign of the times? 18 Ks by St Lucie pitchers in a 4-3 loss. Strikeout rates in the minors are so much higher than in the past.

Tom Brennan said...

Gents, the problem with winning a WS was it used to be 16 teams, then 20, but now with 30 (32?) teams, odds decrease.

Tom Brennan said...

Acuna is remarkably just 8 for 51, with one double and one RBI, since joining the Binghamton team. He has MMS…the dreaded Mets Malaise Syndrome. Usually not fatal, but it is often debilitating. Cause? The curse laid when the word “gets by Buckner” were uttered.

Mack Ade said...

Gets by Buckner was a positive uttered statement for the Mets

Maybe

Castillo dropped the pop up

Apesquat said...

Although Gilbert has hit the ground running.

Tom Brennan said...

Agreed on Gilbert. I hope Acuna does not turn out to be the next Dilson Herrera.

Tom Brennan said...

Mack, my theory is there was a deal with the devil for him to allow that ball to get by. The deal was probably 50 subsequent years of Met fan heartbreak. Just a wild theory, I know….

11 th place? That ain’t stale bread! That’s pretty good and most prospects are still moving up. There a top 10 system next spring.

Tom Brennan said...

I hope they are top 10 next year. Time will tell.

bill metsiac said...

I don't understand that list. We were ranked #11 BEFORE the outstanding deadline deals, yey didn't move up a single spot?

I want an investigation! 😡
