(If Stearns messes this up, put him on The Last Train to Clarksville?)

Of course, there are rumors of a BIG one - per the Athletic and MLB:

"Could one of MLB’s preeminent flamethrowers be on the move … again?

According to a report from The Athletic’s name has come up in trade talks between the Padres and Mets, with New York also said to be discussing starter and relievers  and  with San Diego.

The Padres, who acquired Miller from the Athletics less than five months ago, are reportedly enticed by the Mets’ top prospects -- both pitchers and position players -- as well as some of their young Major Leaguers.

The Athletic's report notes that superstars Francisco Lindor and Fernando Tatis Jr. are not among those being discussed by the two teams."

Naturally, if a deal of this magnitude would happen, the Mets would be surrendering plenty in return.

My brother Steve hears "Mason Miller", the ultimate fireballer, and says, "DO IT!"

Before I render a very unpopular opinion, I’d like to bring attention to an article out this morning by Eno Sarris in The Athletic. Seems MLB is once again catering to its crying poor teams and taking away some analysis equipment from minor league parks or paying to have it put in parks that don’t have it “to level the playing field”. Maybe they should take it out of their revenue sharing since obviously they don’t sign free agents.

Tom, I like Mason Miller too, who doesn’t? But isn’t it better to keep Tong and sign Fairbanks? Besides, it will be Tong plus others. The low hanging fruit is Imai, King, and Fairbanks. Keep your talent and use the money. For the lineup, either do a Peterson for Laureano type of trade or take a chance on Ardolis Garcia. I don’t like players that will be anchors just after they get rid of some or only performed in their home park and sucked on the road.

Also, check out Luis Severino’s home/away splits. I’m interested.

Gus, as a fan, I'd love to see Miller. You've got to give to get. I trust David here on whether to pivot to low velocity Fairbanks. It is frigid in NY today, so I hate hearing the word Fairbanks right now.

Severino's massively worse home ERA, if taken out of the A's team pitching stats, would show the rest of the staff as almost neutral home vs. away, so I am not quite sure of what to make of Sevy's dismal home stats in 2025. He did pitch well as a Met in the Citi Cavern, though.

LOL, Citi Cavern. Citifield was 21st in homerun factoring, and the difference between fifth and 21st wasn’t huge. Sacramento was like 285’ down the RF line… that’s hysterical.

By the way, ask yourself this: Why is San Diego looking to trade this inexpensive and great asset after just two months? They want to slash payroll, not quality. So, what’s up? Maybe Preller over traded and bought a shiny Lamborghini when a BMW did the job?

      Tom Brennan said...

Preller seems to be a trigger-happy feller.

I was reading in Newsday, y’all had 8.5” of snow in Long Island? Oh wow.

      Tom,
I believe you had previously suggested that the Mets bring back Dom Smith as a one year bridge at first base. Would he be a good option as a late inning defensive replacement at first since we seem to be challenged there with our current candidates.

      Tom Brennan said...

D J, I would not bring Smith back with Alonso leaving. It would seem weird. I would only want him if he was a cheap add to a great team. The Mets are not great.

Dom Smith in the 1970s could have been another pinch hitting Ed Kranepool.
