The New York Mets pulled off a dramatic trade, wich involved both the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox.
Coming to the Mets from the Red Sox is veteran 1B Mike Lowell. In addition, the Mets received starting pitcher Andy Sonnastine from the Rays.
The Mets sent injured 1B Daniel Murphy, OF Nick Evans and P Tobi Stoner to the Red Sox and SP Bradley Holt and 2B/SS Ruben Tejada to Tampa Bay.
In addition, the Red Sox receive catcher Kelly Shoppach and prospect shortstop Nick Barnese from the Rays, who shipped pitching prospect Michael Bowdin to Tampa Bay.
"Lowell will immeidately step into the role of starting first baseman," said Jerry Manuel, manager of the New York Mets. "It is our hope that he will also become a mentor to Ike Davis when Ike is ready to make his way to Queens.
Manual also said that Sonnastine will become an immediate member of the Mets rotation, though it remains unclear who he will replace. When pushed, Manual said "Johan is safe at the number one slot."
Detials of the Lowell contract are still sketchy; however, a spokeman for the Mets said that Boston will pay $10mil of Lowells committed 2010 salary.
Sonnastine, 27, who was recently beat out of a rotation spot on the Rays, has a 3-year Rays career of 25-28, 5.40, in 76 games.
All players are expected to report to their new teams one day after all these April 1st bogus trades are listed on the internet just to piss you off.
