Mack: Evening Steve, thanks for spending some time here on Mack's Mets. First of all, please send a few minutes explaining just what your foundation is all about?
Steve: Thank you very much, Mack. Roberto's Kids is an international non profit organization named after Roberto Clemente. We collect new and gently worn baseball equipment from the US and Canada and distribute it to disadvantaged youth in Latin American countries, the US and around the World. we started with one donation of equipment in 1999 and now we're operating in 32 States in the US and 3 Provinces in Canada, delivering over 30 tons of equipment yearly to thousands of needy children. We have the endorsement of MiLB and the blessing of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Clemente, who works closely with us.
Mack: You do great work on and area I'm familiar with. As a local reporter in high schools, I know that inner city schools are in great need, especially in homes of disadvantaged youth. Have you had any direct associating with the Mets yet?
Steve: Yes, Mack - actually, I'm very happy to say that the Mets are long time supporters of our program. Omar Minaya and Pedro Martinez (when he was with the Mets) have both endorsed us, and Rafael Perez, Director of International Player Development for the Mets is a long time friend and mentor. Also the Binghamton Mets and Brooklyn Cyclones hold Roberto Clemente night celebrations with collections for Roberto's Kids each year.
Mack: Naturally, my readers would love to help... how can they donate to your great organization?
Steve: Thanks, Mack - those interested in donating equipment and/or sponsoring a collection drive for us can contact me by phone (cell) 607 437 8779 or email: steve.pindar@robertos-kids.org To learn more about us they can also go to our website: http://www.robertos-kids.org/ Thanks very much!
Mack: One last thing... I had the pleasure of seeing Roberto play. He was equal in talent to Mays, Mantle, and all the big market starts that benefited by the press. Please tell him family that he has been sorely missed since that sad day he left the country.
Steve: I certainly will, Mack. On behalf of myself and my wife as well as the Clemente family and everyone at Roberto's Kids and the children we work with - thanks very much.
