LAST GAME: Binghamton split a twin bill with Bowie Tuesday,
dropping the lid-lifter 5-0 before bouncing back in the nightcap
for a 6-3 win. Chorye Spoone paced the Baysox in the first
game with six, shutout innings despite walking five men. It
was Spoone’s fifth consecutive quality start and third straight
win. Tyler Henson ripped a pair of doubles and scored a run to
lead the Bowie hitters. Spot-starter Scott Shaw was harassed
for four runs over five innings to take the loss. In Game 2,
Brad Holt impressed, retiring 10 straight at one point. He was
untouchable with six strikeouts until the fifth inning when he
permitted three runs and exited an out short of qualifying for
the win. Reese Havens and Kirk Nieuwenhuis both managed a
pair of hits and scored two runs each as the table-setters at
the top of the order. D.J. Wabick drove in a team-high, two
runs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth, that lengthened
the lead to three. Manuel Alvarez improved to 3-0 with the
win, after throwing a third of an inning, and Roy Merritt saved
his fifth game with two, shutout innings to finish the game.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP GAME 1: LHP Mike Antonini
will get the call for his second consecutive start against the
Baysox. He impressed with a quality start of 6.1 innings June
3 at Prince George’s Stadium, in which he allowed just a run
on six hits and tied a season-best with seven strikeouts. The
lefty took a no-decision in the outing and has not won a start
since May 2 at Akron. He is 3-4 with a 4.33 ERA over 11 starts
(62.1 IP). Antonini went 7-5 with a 5.32 ERA over 25 appearances,
20 starts, spanning 115 innings last year with Binghamton.
He was the Mets 18th round choice in the June 2007
draft out of Georgia College & State University.
RHP Ryohei Tanaka will also make his second straight start
against the B-Mets. He set a season-long with seven innings
of one-run work against Binghamton June 3 in Bowie. The
Japanese-born righty limited the B-Mets to just one run on
three hits and failed to walk a man. On the year, Tanaka is 3-5
with a 4.00 ERA over 11 appearances (63 IP). He appeared in
21 games, of which 12 were starts, last season for Bowie and
recorded a 4-4 mark with a 3.00 ERA over 75 innings. Tanaka
was signed out of Japan by the Orioles April 29, 2009.
