Chip Hale:

A separate organizational source said that Wally Backman and third base coach Chip Hale will in fact be two of the internal interviewees, as expected, and could travel to New York as soon as Thursday or Friday. Other strong possibilities include scout and former Seattle and Arizona manager Bob Melvin, minor league field coordinator Terry Collins, Double-A Binghamton manager Tim Teufel and Triple-A manager Ken Oberkfell.

Capt. Kirk:

Adam (New York, NY): Maybe I'm a complete Mets homer, but is Kirk Nieuwenhius not our top OF prospect? I've seen multiple places rank him well below Corey Vaughn and at the same level as Den Dekker. Given his production and development, Kirk seems to have a leg up on them in almost all areas (minus Vaugn's power). Am I off-base?

Jim Callis: You aren't off base. Nieuwenhuis is a better prospect than Vaughn or Den Dekker. I might still make an argument for Fernando Martinez, who's just 22, but there's not another Mets minor league outfielder who's better than Martinez.

Royce Ring:

The Yankees outrighted pitcher Royce Ring to remove him from the 40-man roster, tweets Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger.

Ring, a lefty, turns 30 in December. He spent most of the season at Triple-A, posting a 1.93 ERA, 8.4 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, and 0.4 HR/9 in 42 innings.

Jeurys Familia:

amazin  - STOCK HOLDING - And if that doesn't do it for you, there are more reasons to like his 2010 season: Number one is the huge jump in strikeouts, then there's his already superb GB:FB rate improving even more. Also, it's important to note that FIP of 3.89, a figure not nearly as offensive as the 5+ ERA and driven by a handful of simple factors: 1) A terrible defensive infield featuring Wilmer sandwiched by out-of-position second baseman Michael Fisher and Richard Lucas and his 21 errors at third 2) An unsustainably high BABIP of .350 (compared to a career mark around .290) and 3) an uncharacteristically high HR rate. If you figure that each of those factors improves naturally next season, coupled with reports that Familia's velocity climbed up to 96-97mph while showing even more diving action this year (thus the GB rate), you've got yourself a pretty damn good bet for a bounceback season in 2011.

Starting pitching:

This wasn't actually an area of need until Johan Santana underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in September, knocking him out for at least the first portion of next season. The Mets won't find a similar-caliber pitcher to replace him and could turn to in-house options such as Dillon Gee or Jenrry Mejia. But the team also may choose to fill in the back end of its rotation through free agency.
