"I was real excited and now I'm real devastated. I thought I was the right man for the job for what they wanted."
This was what Wally Backman said publically when asked about not becoming the new Mets manager.
Try to imagine what he probably said privately.
You become the manager of a New York City baseball team because you know how to conduct your business both on and off the field. Frankly, this kind of public smack is exactly what the Mets probably feared would happen some day if Backman was given this position. What they didn't know is it would take less than a day.
For Backman's sake, I hope he didn't cost himself a minor league assignment
A Look Back At The Top 50:Well, we have broken out the top 50 Mets minor leaguers that the team should keep, and placed them on the team they should play in 2011 that will heighten their position in 2012.
Some interesting facts:
-10 for the 50 players will play 2011 at either Brooklyn or a rookie level. That’s about normal because, frankly, we all get a lot more excited about the young ones, especially since they haven’t screwed up yet.
-22 0f the top 50 Mets prospects are targeted to play for either the AA or AAA team. This is easily a first for any year that began with the number “2”. This tells you two things. One, there are plenty of future Mets just one or two levels below and, secondly, there are plenty of quality players you can tempt other teams with.
-Rotation wise, Binghamton is over-stocked while Buffalo is low on prospect talent. And, there’s a chance that Mejia will make the Queens squad out of ST which would mean the Bisons would not have any of the top rotational pitchers in the system.
-Buffalo looks like it’s going to have one hell of a 1-8 lineup… let’s see… Nieuwenhuis, Valdespin, Martinez, Duda, Satin, Lutz… hmm…
