Cutnpaste: - Wally, Terry Collins, Tipping In The Clubhouse, Important Dates, and Backman-Sandy Meeting

Wally:

Said ex-Met Jeremy Reed, who played for Backman at Double-A Birmingham in ’03, in the Chicago White Sox’s system: “He’s definitely the best manager that I’ve had throughout the minor leagues. He puts people in situations to succeed. He’s a fiery guy, a hard-working guy and a guy that when you play for him, you want to succeed so much because of the way he goes about his business every day. Every day we had to work tremendously hard to get better before the game. And then after the game, if things kind of didn’t go our way, he was still the same way and still respected the player. He didn’t bash the player. Sometimes you get a cold shoulder from a manager. He was the same every day, and it was fun to go to the park every day.”

 Terry Collins:

Joel Sherman of the New York Post has backed up a report from SI.com's Jon Heyman that Terry Collins might be the front-runner for the Mets' managerial job.

Sherman's source considers Collins anywhere from "a strong candidate to the front-runner" and adds that "it is possible that all the interviews are just covering bases and they already like Collins the best." Collins, who is the Mets' minor league field coordinator, has previously managed the Astros and Angels. He will be interviewed this weekend in San Diego. Nov. 6 - 8:29 am et

Tipping In The Clubhouse:

When Manny Ramirez was still with Boston, he tipped the entire visiting clubhouse attendant’s crew $50,000 for a three-game series. Believe it or not, Manny’s pregame drink of preference… vodka and a whole jug of cranberry Ocean Spray, adding, “He drank the whole damn thing… I couldn’t believe it. Here is a professional athlete and he’s drinking before the game.” Probably how we got to “Manny being Manny,” after all these years.

Backman-Sandy Meeting:

Wally Backman, the gritty second baseman from the Mets' 1986 World Series squad who skippered Single-A Brooklyn to a 51-24 record and a playoff berth in 2010, met with Alderson Saturday for about three hours in San Diego.

"I thought it went very well," Backman told the Daily News Saturday night. "But out of respect to the Mets and the interview process, I'm not going to comment any further."

Backman, who could be offered a spot on the Mets' major-league coaching staff if he doesn't get the manager's job, has rebuilt his reputation after being axed just four days after being hired to manage the Diamondbacks in 2004 when it was revealed he had lied about his past, including serious financial problems and arrests for DUI and an altercation at his home in Oregon.
