The Mack Draft Report – Travis Harrison, The BDR, Scrimmage News, Matt Maronde, Jake Cave

We’ve talked about 3B/OF Travis Harrison before, but there seems to be some kind of disagreement regarding his speed. XMLBScout has him clocked under 7.0 for the 60, but it seems that Harrison ran only at 7.09 at the Area Code games.

“X” sayd that this happens sometimes when players just get sick and tired of doing all these tests for a bunch of old while men. I tend to agree with him, and ya know what? If Harrison can hit a ball further than Bryce Harper, which he did, then I don’t give a shit if he’s the second coming of Jimmy Piersall and runs the bases backwards.

Either way, Harrison will be long gone before the first round is completed. This draft is considered a good one for bats and Harrison is considered one of the best of the best.

My hopes are that he’s still around when the Mets get around to the 13th pick. I don’t expect the Mets to disrespect the draft like they had under Omar Minaya and Harrison would be the perfect first pick. But, we’ll see.

One more thing about Harrison and his dedication to becoming a major league ballplayer some day. According to PG, he has played in 32… I repeat, 32 showcase events since 2005. Every baseball scout in baseball has got a peek at this kid, which I’m sure was the intention of his family.

Just watch this pay off on draft day.

One of my favorite sites, BDR , almost came back alive this week. Like my friend Andy Seiler over at www.mlbbonusbaby.com, Rob Ozga took a hiatus once the last draft was over. The difference between the two is the fact that Rob did place an entry this past week saying he is “back”. In fact, the entry was entitled “Back”. Then he went away again.

Looking forward to him coming back… again.

Re: Andy… still lost.

In scrimmage news…

Wake Forest beat… err… Wake Forest, 4-2. Pat Blair and Chris Wilson had all four runs batted in for the Black team. Matt Conway had the only ribby for Gold team. Brian Holmes got the win, Michael Dimock picked up the save, and Justin Van Groux took the loss. Wake Forest record is now…. 1-1????

Pepperdine Blue 5, Pepperdine Orange 5… Joe Sever doubled in the fifth inning and scored on Trent Diedrich’s sac fly… Scott Frazier: 4.2-IP, 4-R, 3-ER, 7-H, 1-BB, 2-K. Jared Lee: 4.1-IP, 4-R, 3-H, 3-BB, 4-K. Zach Vincej’s single scored Cody Dickerson… reliever Brain McIlhenny was credited with the “tie-save”. Freshman OF Bruyan Langlois hit a 2-run homer…

You can’t have enough great LHPs in the draft, can you?

Right now, there are only three that stand out from the rest of the pack and look like sure first rounders. They are underclassman Matt Purke, Daniel Norris and Danny Hultzen.

Henry Owens is the lone second tier lefty ranked, followed by third tier pitchers Ryan Carpenter, Brett Mooneyham and Jed Bradley.

Florida’s Matt Maronde is one of the six tier four guys that right now are slotted for a .pick somewhere in the 3rd-5th round

For the record: - 6-3, 195… attended Lexington Catholic High School (Kentucky)… senior H.S. stats: 8-1, 0.54., 129-K, 77-IP, 21-BB… Was ranked No. 19 on Baseball America’s list of 2008 Top 100 High School Prospects... was 26th on Rivals’ Top 100… He was named first-team all-state while also being named Co-Pitcher of the Year on the Lexington Herald-Leader All-City Team… Freshman year at UF: 21-G, 11-starts, 3-1, , 4.40, 61.1-IP, 59-K… Sophomore: 22-relief appearances, 2-0, 6.15.. 2010 Cape Cod: - 2-0, 2.29, 10-appearances

Hard to say right now on this kid. Needs a big year in 2001 in a relief role.

I have a problem with Jake Cave.

I don’t know if I should rank him as an outfielder or a pitcher.

It seems that the mock drafts are split evenly here, so I still have him in the outfield, which was where the couple of original mockers placed him.

The 6-1, 180-pound LHP Cave made headlines on the last night of the WWBA, touching 93. He also dished up a 77-79 change-up, with, what one scout said, had “dive and good deception”. Cave pitched 4.0 innings and had nine strikeouts.

But here’s the conundrum (I can’t believe I used this tied word)…

He hits like an outfielder should. Excellent bat speed… skinny… doesn’t look like a player… 4.09 to first base… cuts bag well… drives ball consistently to gaps… 5-tool potential… bats second for the Canes…
