Round 28: - RHP - Jharel Cooper

Jharel Cotton's performance this summer with the Peninsula Pilots led the Los Angeles Dodgers to offer him a $125,000 signing bonus. But as Monday night's signing deadline approached, Cotton said thanks but no thanks. Cotton decided to pass on the Dodgers' six-figure proposal and return to Miami Dade College, where he will be going into his second season as a right-handed pitcher. "I just feel like I can do much better next year," said Cotton, who was not selected in this summer's First-Year Player Draft. "I know I'll get a call next summer. I just hope it's a good situation. Hopefully, I'll have an awesome year and it'll work out much better." Cotton has committed to attend East Carolina after leaving Miami-Dade and play for the Pirates in 2011-12. However, he is eligible for next summer's draft. Cotton, a key player in Menchville's 2008 state title run, went 5-2 with a 2.77 ERA as a freshman at Miami Dade. This summer, he was 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA with the Peninsula Pilots. - http://www.dailypress.com/sports/dp-spt-cotton-says-no-to-dodgers,0,6333278.story

In the middle of batting practice one afternoon in May, Peninsula Pilots coach Hank Morgan took pitcher Jharel Cotton for a walk. They wound up in center field, right by the 402 sign on the wall.
Morgan asked Cotton if he noticed anything. Cotton gave him a look that read, "You mean, other than batting practice is going on and we're standing out here?" Which was Morgan's point. Batting practice was going on, and nobody was hitting the ball where they were. So don't worry about batters taking you deep. -  http://articles.dailypress.com/2010-07-01/sports/dp-spt-pilots-jharel-cotton-20100701_1_peninsula-pilots-coach-strike-zone-virgin-islands
