The Savannah Sand Gnats took control of a see-saw game with a five-run eighth inning to defeat the Rome Braves 13-8 at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, GA Monday night. The Gnats (4-1/43-32) have won four of five games to start the second half of the South Atlantic League season.
In a 7-7 game in the eighth, the Gnats loaded the bases with one out. 2B Luis Nieves drew a walk to force in 1B Sam Honeck with the go-ahead run. CF Rafael Fernandez followed with a three-run triple to left field that cleared the bases and gave the Gnats an 11-7 advantage. 3B Aderlin Rodriguez completed the inning’s scoring with a sacrifice fly to bring home Fernandez. Fernandez has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games.
The Braves (1-4/26-49) picked up a run back in the bottom of the eighth before the Gnats completed the game’s scoring with a run in the top of the ninth.
The early innings of the game saw the teams trade the lead back and forth. The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on 3B Edward Salcedo’s solo home run but the Gnats hopped in front with a two-run second inning. 1B Sam Honeck tripled home C Albert Cordero and then scored on RF Joe Bonfe’s RBI single into left for a 2-1 Gnats’ lead.
Honeck was 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk and an RBI. Bonfe was 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.
The teams exchanged four-run innings in the third and fourth innings. The Braves chased Savannah starter Gonzalez Germen from the game with a four-run third that produced a 5-2 lead. The Gnats answered back immediately in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Bonfe singled into centerfield to bring the Gnats back within a run at 5-4. Honeck scored the tying run on a wild pitch. After Bonfe moved to second on the wild pitch, SS Wilfredo Tovar lined a single into right to put Savannah in front 6-5. However, Rome evened the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth.
LHP Chase Huchingson held the Braves to one run in the fifth through seven to pick up his fifth win of the year. He struck out two and did not walk a batter.
