Los Mets, Draft Status, Over-Slots, Short Season Teams
Okay, now don’t get excited. This is not an anti-Latin rant. In fact, it’s kind of the opposite. We’ve done a fair amount of discussions lately on the quality of prospect talent in the Mets affiliate system and I think at this point we can agree on two points:
1. The Mets have produced an above average amount of major league players from their system, in the past five years.
2. The Mets current affiliate prospects are concentrated in the middle (A+/AA) levels of the organization.
June has produced the draft and the introduction of all the Mets short-season teams. Rosters are set and teams are playing. We can now make some definitive statements regarding the direction the Mets are going:
1. I currently show the Mets having 14 top-level prospects in the system. Only four (Cory Vaughn, Matt den Decker, Matt Harvey, Reese Havens) come from draft picks.
2. There are no draft pick prospects on any of the short-season teams (Brooklyn, Kingsport, GCL, DSL, DSL2).
3. There were 22 high school players drafted in the 2011 draft. Only one has signed.
4. Currently, no draftees have been signed with over-slot money.
5. Of the 51 players drafted by the Mets in the 2011 draft, 20 have been signed, and 31 remain unsigned.

If they expected to get these high schoolers without paying over slot, then Citifield mustn't be located in Queens like we all thought. It would be in La La Land. Nimmo, Fulmer, Robbins, and company are not coming for short money and its doubtful the Amazins thought they would. Hopefully, its just negotiating 101, because to let them go unsigned would be a huge blunder and would make the front office and the Wilpons look like fools. I don't believe they're fools, so my fingies are crossed, and so are my legs. I think they should zero in on the top five high schoolers that they believe show the most upside, pay what it takes, pray for results, and concentrate on winning this season. Remember, securing these players strengthens the system and if the Mets collapse this year, they'll be adding proven, hopefully blue chip prospects via any trades for Reyes, Beltran, and K-Rod. So, in my view, part with the cash now because 2011, if nothing else, can be a clear turning point in developing a deep minor league system. They have a monumental chance to upgrade this year like never before. I wouldn't be suprised if they bypassed the proven college arms, knowing all along they'd get more developed pitchers in July by trading their best players.
I'm with ya Charles... my eyes are crossed too...
but, they are high school kids...
no guarantees here and, frankly, higher odds that college juniors with stats of 7-3, 3.49, 106-K, 98.0-IP against ranked seasoned college stars
Sean Buckle, from Wilson, who just last Saturday had what his family hopes will be a final procedure on the fractured vertebrae in his neck. Buckle was drafted by the Mets but has said he plans on fulfilling his commitment to attend Loyola Marymount University -

Personally, I would love to see the Mets sign a few of these talented HS players Nimmo, Fulmer, Robbins, Evans, Matthews, Reed, Cotton, Ake, Mercado, but those guys right there will cost the Mets approx $10M to sign them. Nimmo is in the $2.5M area, Fulmer probably $1.75 area, Robbins already turned down $600K from Mariners and the other guys look to be talented just based on where they've committed to play college baseball at. They said from day 1 that this would be the way the Mets rebuild through the draft, let's see it in action!
