Taylor Whittenton, Marcos Camarena, Matt Harvey, Lucas Duda, Claiming Carlos

Taylor Whittenton:

6-27-11: - Whitenton pitched another gem for the Sand Gnats Sunday night. Taylor pitched 6.0 innings, giving up 0-R, 4-H, while striking out four. He’s started 11 of his 15 appearances this year and now posts an overall 3.02 ERA. More important, he has 73-K in 62.2-IP, while walking only 29. One could make a case of removing either Kyle Allen or Scott Moviel from the St. Lucie rotation and kicking up “Whit”, but that’s not my call.

Marcos Camarena:

6-27-11: - Another player we should begin to keep an eye of is SP Marcos Camarena. I’ve had him as the #77 Keeper, after having two excellent seasons in the system. In 2009, he went 7-2, 1.74, in 14-G, 12-starts for the DSL Mets, and followed that in 2010 with a 3-3, 2.68 stinit for Kingsport. The 6-3 right hander pitched for Brooklyn on Sunday, giving up zero earned runs over six innings. He’s now 1-0, 1.80 after two starts and you should keep one eye on this control starter.

Matt Harvey:

6-27-11: - http://www.metstoday.com/6605/mets-minors/all-about-matt-harvey  - Sandy Alderson has already stated that his administration will try not to rush prospects through the minor league system into the majors after seeing the failed cases of Scott Kazmir and Fernando Martinez, for example. Regardless, since Harvey was a high 1st-round pick, we shouldn’t be surprised to see him in a Mets uniform and in the starting rotation by July of 2012. This kid is a real keeper and he is going to be a successful MLB pitcher hopefully with the Mets. He has top-of-the-rotation stuff and will be up there in the Mets rotation with Johan Santana when the Met ace returns from injury. (editor: I do not agree with this).

Lucas Duda:

6-27-11: - http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/lucas-duda-roger-bernadina-nl-of  - Really, this blurb might as well start with Jason Bay and get it over with. Carlos Beltran will miss the occasional game, but if Duda wants to get enough plate appearances to be even deep-league relevant, he’ll need to steal some time from Bay. Lately, there’s been a few days where Terry Collins has given Bay ‘mental health’ days off, but if the expensive Omar Minaya acquisition returns to even 80% Jason Bay levels, Duda may find himself back in the minors shortly. Unfortunately, counting last year, we now have over 600 plate appearances of Bay sporting an HR/FB rate just around five. Hitting a career low in fly balls is not helping matters this year, either. Other than his expensive contract, there’s little reason to believe that he deserves time on a major league corner outfield right now. Which is not to say that Duda necessarily does either. He hasn’t found his power stroke just like Bay. But he’s only put up 65 plate appearances. Given time, he could hit .250+ with above-average power — his ISO has been .295 the last two years in Triple-A — and that’s more than you can say for Bay right now. Duda’s an okay flier in the deepest of leagues.  (again, I don't agree with this.. Duda will play 1B for Mets also)

Claiming Carlos:

For instance, if the Mets hold Carlos Beltran at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline and then subsequently want to trade him because they have faded from contention, Beltran would secretly be placed on waivers. If Beltran is claimed, the Mets have three options: • Pull him back, which would prevent Beltran from being traded anywhere. • Let the claiming team have Beltran and receive nothing in return other than the salary relief. • Try to swing a trade with the claiming team. (If no trade can be worked out, Beltran then is pulled back and cannot be traded anywhere else.) - http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/27704/in-depth-why-july-31-really-isnt-deadline
