The victory was Binghamton’s fourth walk-off win of the year. They have won three straight rubber matches and are 5-5 in series-deciding games. The B-Mets have won four-straight series.
For the third straight night, the Rock Cats took the early lead. Brian Dozier led off the game by walking against Robert Carson, stole second, and came home with the game’s first run on Mike Hollimon’s double. Joe Benson followed with a double to left to plate Hollimon. Benson came home two groundouts later to make it 3-0.
Binghamton scratched out a run off starter Logan Darnell in the first. Jon Malo laced a triple to center field and scored when Reese Havens lined a single to left field.
The B-Mets ramped up the offense in the third. Darnell plunked Matt den Dekker to start the frame and hit Reese Havens two batters later. Juan Lagares made the lefty pay with a single to centerfield to bring the B-Mets within one.
After Brahiam Maldonado singled to load the bases, Allan Dykstra stepped to the plate. The designated hitter slugged a 2-2 pitch from Darnell off the right field foul pole for his 16th homer of the season. It was the first B-Met grand slam since Raul Reyes launched one on June 29, 2010.
Trailing 6-3, the Rock Cats mounted a gradual comeback. Chris Parmelee started the fourth by ripping the first pitch he saw over the right field fence. New Britain picked up another run on Evan Bigley’s RBI single in the fifth.
The B-Mets added an insurance run in the sixth. Eric Campbell led off with a triple and scored on Niuman Romero’s single to left. Campbell’s triple was Binghamton’s fifth three-bagger of the series.
Ricky Brooks took over for Carson in the sixth and tossed two scoreless innings. The righty extended his scoreless appearances streak to 12 games, spanning 17.0 innings.
Josh Stinson got the ball in the eighth and allowed the first three he faced to reach, all on singles. Deibinson Romero lifted a sac fly to center to cut the lead to one. After a fielding error by Niuman Romero loaded the bases, Mark Dolenc popped out in foul territory to Campbell at first. Bigley tagged up from the third and scored to tie the game at seven.
After the B-Mets had nine straight retired by a combination of Darnell, Brett Jacobson, and Andrew Albers, Steve Hirschfeld took over in the ninth. He walked leadoff hitter Kai Gronauer on four pitches to start the inning. Mike Fisher pinch ran for Gronauer and advanced to second on den Dekker’s sac bunt.
With Jon Malo at the plate, Hirschfeld uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Fisher to scamper to third. Malo lifted the next pitch to right fielder Chris Parmelee with Fisher tagging at third. Parmelee made the grab, but his throw was high and Fisher scored the game-winning run.
Stinson picked up his third win of the season after suffering his second blown save. Hirschfeld was handed his eighth loss of the year. Carson took a no-decision, allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings of work.
Binghamton (53-71) hit the road for three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs starting tomorrow night at 7:00pm. RHP Jeurys Familia (3-3, 3.78) will square off against RHP Miguel Gonzalez (0-4, 6.21). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45pm on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
