After having their game rained out on Tuesday evening, the Cyclones once again needed to wait out the rain before beginning play on Wednesday evening. The Cyclones and Muckdogs were scheduled to play two, seven inning games beginning at 5:05 PM, but instead had to settle for one, nine-inning game, which the Cyclones won 9-2 following a rain delay of over two and a half hours. Javier Rodriguez had three RBI and Travis Taijeron added four RBI to pace the Cyclones offense, while Marco Camarena pitched 5.2 masterful innings to get the win.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cyclones used a two-out rally in the second to draw first blood. Brooklyn took advantage of early wildness from Batavia’s starter Patrick Daugherty, who walked five in only 2.0 innings of work, to push across the first runs of the game. Charley Thurber, Tyler Carpenter and Danny Muno each worked walks, in between a pair of strikeouts, to load the bases with two outs. Ismael Tijerina responded by connecting on a two-RBI single to right field, scoring Thurber and Carpenter to give the Cyclones a 2-0 advantage. Javier Rodriguez was the next batter and he followed suit with a booming double to center field that chased home two more runs to make it 4-0 in favor of the Cyclones.
With Marco Camarena (2-3) on the mound, that would prove to be all the offense that Brooklyn would need. The righthander, who has allowed only one run in his last 16.2 innings, tossed 5.2 scoreless frame this evening, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out six to collect the first win by a Cyclones starting pitcher since July 21st.
But once Camarena came out of the game, the Muckdogs rallied. In the bottom of the eighth, Batavia scored a pair of runs off a combination of Brooklyn relievers Tyson Seng and Todd Weldon but newly appointed NYPL All-Star T.J. Chism came in with the tying runs on base and retired Muckdogs center fielder Nicholas Martini to end the inning with the Cyclones lead cut in half at 4-2.
But in the top of the ninth, the Cyclones would respond in a BIG way to blow the game wide open. Danny Muno started the rally with a double, and after a sacrifice bunt came around to score on an RBI single from J-Rod. Richard Lucas then walked and Brian Harrison reached on an error to load the bases before Travis Taijeron cleared the bags with his second grand slam, and eighth home run overall, to push the Cyclones advantage to 9-2. Steven Winnick pitched a scoreless bottom half of the ninth to close out the win for the Cyclones.
