The Palm Beach Cardinals (24-27) dropped their third straight game, as the St. Lucie Mets (40-11) pounded the Cardinals for nine runs on 16 hits in route to a 9-1 victory.
After recording his team-leading third win a week ago, Drew Benes looked to continue his winning ways against the Mets. However, the Mets had other ideas, scoring two runs in the first to mount an early 2-0 lead. Things did not get any easier for the right-hander as the Mets scored another run in the top of the second inning, expanding their lead to 3-0. Benes labored in the third, giving up a single, walk and hit batsmen, but he escaped the mess with a double play and lazy fly out to left. Despite his efforts in the third, he did not come out to pitch the fourth inning as he was lifted for the bullpen. Benes' shortest outing of the season earned him his fourth loss as the Mets kept tallying runs.
The Mets' Darrell Ceciliani, Wilmer Flores and Cory Vaughn went a combined 6-for-14 with four runs and seven RBI. The Mets 3-4-5 hitters were involved in all but one of the runs on the night. However, it was not just the middle of the order; each starter collected at least one hit on Tuesday night. The 16 hits were the highest output by any team against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals lone run came in the seventh inning. Starlin Rodriguez was walked and moved over on a balk by Cory Mazzoni. After a fly out by Chris Edmondson and infield single by Jonathan Rodriguez, Rodriguez scored on a fielder's choice by Jeremy Patton to cut the lead 7-1. However, that would be it, as Mazzoni tossed seven innings, scattering three hits and giving up one run. The bullpen finished the job for the Mets, who collected their league-leading 40th victory of the season.
Jonathan Rodriguez paced the Cardinals with 2-for-4 night, while Starlin Rodriguez, Mike O'Neill and Edmonson added one hit apiece.
The Cardinals return to action tomorrow night, as they try an even the series against the front-running Mets. First pitch is scheduled at 6:35 p.m. on Silver Slugger night. Do not forget your Bingo cards because the 'Dean' is the place to be for all your FSL action.
