More Draft Notes 5-26-12

No major injuries so far in the conference games. Hopefully, writing this won’t jinx anyone.

This just in… Ga Tech Blake Wood had Tommy John surgery Friday.

Don’t look for any particular performance during these games, or the World Series, to change the status of each player on an MLB team’s board. The high school kids are still being individually worked out, and, yes, all the college scouts are in the field, but the boards are pretty set.

What can still happen is a senior go nuts during the next few weeks or a name some team has projected as a late round pick, strikes out 14 somewhere. That usually sets off a shit storm of major proportions. Some scouts are told to hound the kid and pray he pitches again before the team loses and shuts down. Others start calling coaches of opposing teams to get much too late scouting reports.

I’m sure there was someone out there that would have told you that Mike Piazza can surely hit the ball.

I’m being told that Clemson 3B Richie Shaffer is a guaranteed top 15 pick. I know the Tiger can hit, but, in my research, that’s pretty high. We seem to be starting to see the realization that there are about five great bats in this draft and that’s it.

The word going around the camps is that OF Anthony Alford is telling everyone not to draft him because he intends to go to college. One scout told me, ‘yeah, that’s what Josh Bell said…”.

The father of one of the top projected picks in the upcoming draft told me that ‘he knows little about the draft process’ and that his ‘son doesn’t follow it at all…”. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha….
