Erie 5 - Binghamton 2

SeaWolves Spoil Series Opener, 5-2

BINGHAMTON, NY – After the Binghamton Mets took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Erie SeaWolves scored five unanswered runs as they defeated the B-Mets, 5-2,Friday night at NYSEG Stadium.

Binghamton tallied only four hits over the final seven innings, as they lost their third consecutive series opener.

The B-Met offense did their damage in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter Kyle Lobstein. Alonzo Harris got the scoring started with an RBI bloop single into right field to score Richard Lucas. Xorge Carillo followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give Binghamton an early 2-0 lead.

Unfortunately, Lobstein took charge for the remainder of the game. Binghamton threatened in the fourth with runners on the corners, but did not put a runner on third base in any of the final five innings.

Meanwhile, Erie got on the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the third against Logan Verrett. James Robbins hit a solo home run over the left field wall to cut the B-Met lead to 2-1.

In the sixth, Marcus Lemon led things off with an opposite field double. Zach Maggard bunted the next pitch right back to Verrett as a sacrifice. Logan fielded it and threw it to third, but it was not in time as Lemon advanced to third on the play.

With runners on the corners, Jamie Johnson hit a fly ball into the left-centerfield gap. Both Darrell Cecilaini and Alonzo Harris dove for the ball and collided with each other in the process. The ball hit the ground, and two runs scored on a triple to put Erie up 3-2.

Verrett pitched into the eighth inning for the third time this season, but could not get through the frame. With two outs, Hernan Perez launched a two-run home run over the left field wall to give the SeaWolves a 5-2 advantage. Verrett left the game after allowing the blast, and struck out a career-high 11 batters in the effort.

Chase Huchingson relieved the righty, and finished the rest of the game without allowing a run.

Lobstein exited the hill after eight innings. He gave up just six total hits before handing things off to his closer, Justin Souza. Danny Muno doubled to begin the ninth, but he was stranded at second as Souza earned his 15th save of the season. Lobstein (7-4) got the win, and Verrett (8-3) was tagged with the loss.

The B-Mets (44-28) return to the field on Saturday night for the second game of the series against the SeaWolves (38-33). Binghamton will send LHP Mark Cohoon to the mound, as he makes his ninth start of the season. First pitch is at 7:05 PM, and the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show starts at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton has now lost three consecutive series-opening games…2:27 is the shortest nine-inning game for Binghamton since May 23rd at New Britain (2:07)…Logan Verrett has allowed 13 home runs this season, which is the most on the team
