“Are we destined for right now or maybe later?”
Every single time a new baseball season is upon us, we all have that same feeling as diehard NY Mets fans. That glimmer of hope that everything is great, our pitching is strong, our hitting is ferocious, and our defense doesn’t take anything without dishing twice as much back. Sadly, the reality of Mets fans is a few months after that glimmer of hope fades, we are looking at glimpses of greatness mixed in with way too many mistakes. Before the start of the season, Mets fans were believing we could be a very competitive team that would be going places. Every major professional news service from ESPN to Mets blogs on the internet said we would be in for a very long losing season. Boy, were they right.
As I look at this season so far, it’s about 80% true to the reality that we aren’t a competitive team at all. 20% of it has lots of nice gems that were nice surprises with familiar faces. Guys like Murphy, Harvey, Duda, and Wright continue their consistency of being the main pillars of this team. Then some nice gems with Lagares, Young Jr., and Turner really started to make it seem we could compete in the NL East. Then you look at our Bullpen and realize why we are where we are in the Standings.
This season really seems like it’s a “maybe later” kind of year. You know, we have some nice pieces of the puzzle to build around but we’re missing some really big key pieces. This could be a year that we just develop the youth movement that is developing in AAA Vegas to see who pans out for the next few years to come. From what I hear, the Mets will indeed have quite some money available to sign some key talent come free agency or maybe even with some trades. I highly doubt they’ll trade guys like Harvey or Wheeler but I see guys like Murphy or Duda being on that trading block to get some bigger pieces we desperately need.
We honestly need some great arms for our bullpen. We need the kind of aggression Harvey brings to be present in the Bullpen. Sign a few guys with his kind of style of domination at the mound and you will see an immediate impact across this team. Bring in a quality Outfielder who has a rocket for an arm and can hit HR’s all over the field to bring some pop and shock value to our lineup. Too many times we get into slumps where we can’t even get a hit and it makes us look anemic.
Overall, as long as this team plays with heart and fights to win every game presented in front of them, I’ll always root for the Mets. I think it’s there but the talent isn’t at the moment across the team. This season, I’d call up as many prospects as possible when needed for current pro players who just aren’t getting the job done. Give them opportunities now so come next season, they will be ready for what should be a competitive team and hopefully a winning season. It’s about time this organization starts spending money to bring veteran players who will bring quality and wins to this team. I’m willing to sacrifice this season for that vision, but then again, that glimmer of hope just never truly leaves me.
