Tom Brennan - The Mets’ Next Elite Hitting Prospect Behind The Elite Four

I dunno - you just get more excited about some prospects than others

We all know about the Big 4:

Baty, Vientos, Mauricio, and Alvarez.

Four stellar prospects.

All should become impact major leaguers.

But the Mets also have other very good hitters - including an 18 year old five-tools prospect playing for St Lucie.  No rookie ball for him, unlike the aforementioned foursome. Nope…right into low A ball at age 18.

He started out over his head and striking out a ton.  But he has hit .290 from August 1 through September 6, and in those 24 games, a much improved 25 Ks.

His name?

Alex Ramirez

Tall, very fast…

Power that will no doubt develop like Ronny Mauricio’s has.

Also playing a solid CF and RF so far.

The righty hitting Ramirez is listed 6’3”, 170.  Signed for $2.05 million a few years back. Which sure says “elite prospect.”

I’d imagine he will be 6’3”, 200 or thereabouts when he debuts with the Mets…which I have a funny feeling will be probably in mid-2023.

OD 2024 the latest.  When he will have just turned 21.

If he stays healthy, with 2 more full minor league seasons in 2022 and 2023, how could he not be ready?

He might just be the Mets’ Juan Soto clone. Why not?

I expect BIG THINGS in the minors for Alex Ramirez in 2022.

You should, too.

BTW, this is no slight of Jose Peroza, who I believe will also be MLB ready by OD 2024.

But my gut tells me Ramirez’s ceiling is extremely high.

The FIFTH ELITE STUD.

Interesting that John’s post this AM reflected the following:

Prospects 1500: New York Mets 2021 Midseason Top 50 Prospects. They do a good job looking at 50 Mets prospects (plus 2 extras). They have Francisco Alvarez at #1 and Brett Baty at #2 as the only ones projected to be Major League All Stars (their Tier 1). For their Tier 2 category (Players with an above-average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor) they have #3 Matthew Allan and #4 Mark Vientos. Ronny Mauricio comes in at #5 as a Tier 3 player – “average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor”.

Great post and it will be interesting to see what the FO does as were already looking at where do all our infielders go with the Cano decision a big one. I hear we're looking at a DH going forward and hope they go with a 1st base DH split with Pete and Dom as I would hate to see Dom blossom with another team as their 1st baseman. As far as Ramirez being the next Soto I'd be ok with him as the next Acuna if thats ok with you.

I usually agree with the Prospect 1500 distribution of prospects, and usually do. They aren’t influenced by the hype, like MLB.com is. However, I cannot believe Carlos Dominguez is nowhere to be found but Blake McIntosh is? No Junior Santos? No Harol Gonzalez?

My mistake on Santos, I overlooked him. The other two should be on there somewhere.

I think they are wrong about Mauricio. I expect he will be an impact bat.

Dom needs a new team

Dom is a better hitter than he is showing in 2021. Why sour on him and not also Conforto, Lindor and a slew of others?

Tom Brennan said...

Ray, I agree on Mauricio…Amed with a lot more power.

Gus, Harol’s arm injury must have knocked him off. Santos has made solid progress this season.

Bad year for Dom. But players often rebound the following year

Tom, thanks for enlightening on Ramirez. I really look forward to seeing him come up through the ranks!
Reese, I am more sour on Conforto than I am on Smith. If there is a DH role in the NL future, we should keep Dom and play him full time at 1B/DH. Otherwise his talents are wasted, so get some value for him - hopefully in a trade with the AL, and not the NL East where he can come back and haunt us 17 times per year.

Ramirez = Acura in 2 years? Sign me up.

Nick Meyer should be there too.

Is it in the Mets best interest to attempt to swap Lindor's bad contract for another team's bad contract. Are there any team's with contracts that would work to the advantage for both teams? Your thoughts.

Tom Brennan said...

DJ, I’d keep Lindor and hope he roars back in 2022. Cohen broke it, he owns it, and hopefully Crazy Glue will fix it.

John, you need to make a WAR case to me on Nick Meter. But Wilmer Reyes? Hits his first 2 at bats!
