5 Q&As:
1. In response to: 5 4 4-6: Tranactions, Jon Niese, Ruben Tejada, The Reyes Era... and BP ST Recap
Anonymous #1 said... That article by Vecsy in the NYT, mentioning the Reyes Era, was a terrible article, written at a terrible time by an otherwise fine writer. A complete downer piece fraught with inaccuracies. Poor George can't hide his Yankee stripes ,or the foul impulse to hit a team when they are down and about to get up. Yesterday's game put a thumb in his eye.
-I’ve learned that it’s so much easier to write something negative than to take the time and contract a good old nice story about someone that has done something good. This is where media has taken us in the 21st Century, and since I’ve been in media since 1970, I guess I have to take some of the blame here. But, it’s sort of like what we used to say about the Vietnam War’s Lt. Calley, who was imprisioned for atrocities against women and children in country… if he deserved 20 years in the brig, I guess we all should get two…
2. In response to: 5 4 4-6: Tranactions, Jon Niese, Ruben Tejada, The Reyes Era... and BP ST Recap
Anonymous #2 said... Your way to negative for me. In a short time Reyes will be back, and be very, very good. Murphy in just a few weeks will be back, and his growth last year, was really good, and it will be like that this year. Then Beltran should be back near the 1st of May. And will fill the line up to be one of the best in the majors. The only real problem is the last 4 starters. To bad there was not enough FA of enough value, or the desire to be on the club out there to get. But one never knows what could happen. Maybe enough of the staff will be good enough to go.
-a reminder… all five paragraphs, from five Mets stories, in the “5 4” series, are cut and paste jobs from stories or blog entries other writers have offered about the Mets.
I do cop to being more negative this year, but not about the team. It’s the way it’s run that doesn’t work for me.
3. In response to a message I left for Jack Flynn regarding Jenrry Mejia:
Anonymous said: Mack... you obviously dont know jack if you think there arm no arms that could help this team in 2011. Niesen, Holt, Mejia (If Around), Maybe even a guy like Scott Shaw, Tobi Stoner and Dillon Gee could add quality starts
-for the record, what I said was: there is no one there ready to help this season. Maybe even 2011.
The key words here are “ready” and “maybe”.
Not one single pitcher on the current 2010 Buffalo or Binghamton staff elevated their game last year enough to be considered part of the 2011 rotation. Actually, all of the guys many of us thought would be stepping up this spring (Mike Antonini, Dillon Gee, Brad Holt, Dylan Owen)didn’t have a banner year in 2010 at the level they pitched.
In addition, neither did Mejia.
Regarding 2011, my guess is both Jeurys Familia and Robert Carson will compete for a starting slot, but they still both need to be successful at, first the A+ level, and then, AA. This is where most rookie level prospects fall to the side of the road.
Regarding Jack… you’re right… I don’t know Jack, since Egbert is a relief pitcher, not a starter.
(addition: Holt went on the DL last night...)
4. In response to Hobie saying:
Do you have the Bingo roster yet, Mack? The MiLB.com roster is obviously out of date. And BTW, has there been a Jordan Abruzzo sighting?
No, still don’t have all the rosters… for some reason it’s eaiser getting information out of GITMO than the Mets minor league rosters every year. I don’t have to tell you about the Lucy web site…
Regarding Jordan Abrusso… he will start the season as the first string catcher at Lucy…
5. In response to 4-8 “Bisons: Early Wake-Up Call” posting… Anonymous said...
After last season, the Wilpon's had to personally visit Buffalo's owners to assure them that next year's team would be better - or Buffalo might exercise it's option after year two and drop the Mets as an affiliate. Makes you wonder what the real reason Ike Davis, and to a lesser extent Fernando Martinez, are at Buffalo. In my opinion, there's no reason Davis isn't in NY getting his feet wet til Murphy gets back. This is just another prime example of the Wilpons trying to please someone else (another always signing players at or below slot rather than pay more (or abover slot) like other teams do to ensure signability of said player) at the expense of the big league club. Note to Wilpons: The minor leagues are there to support the major leagues - not the other way around. I'm just amazed no Major Newspaper has explored the above.
-Good observation… last year was an embarrassment, especially since Buffalo has fielded some decent teams before becoming a Mets affiliate…
I agree with you that the Wilpons need to let the baseball experts make team decisions, but I don’t share your opinon on the “Class of 2010” Davis, Tejada, Mejia, and Thole should not be in Queens this year… and the experiment of pitching a 20-year old in New York City should be illegal…
Mack
